BLACK PANTHER Star Winston Duke Is Campaigning To Play BATMAN In The DCU

It's probably going to be a while before DC Studios begins casting for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but an MCU star has now thrown his hat in the ring...

Winston Duke emerged as one of the standouts of both Black Panther movies thanks to his memorable take on M'Baku, and by all accounts, the actor is also a major highlight of The Fall Guy.

Duke has yet to establish himself as a Hollywood leading man, but all it takes is the right role, and the actor has set his sights on what will likely be the most sought-after part in Hollywood down the line.

During an interview with /Film, Duke was asked about the possibility of suiting up as The Dark Knight in the upcoming DCU Batman reboot, The Brave and the Bold, after previously voicing Bruce Wayne in the Batman Unburied podcast.

"Listen, man, can you start that [campaign]? [Laughs] I would say I challenge you to get on all these socials and push for me. Get your community. I would love to. I would love to do that as Batman. I'd love any opportunity to explore new characters, to change narratives around some of these entrenched ideas of how these characters are supposed to look, sound, and perform. I'm all for it."

We're sure Duke won't be the last actor to campaign for this role, but it's probably going to be quite a while before DC Studios begins the casting process.

The closest we've come to any kind of casting "rumor" was a bit of internet scuttlebutt about Jensen Ackles possibly being considered for the role, but The Boys and Supernatural actor made it clear that no conversations have taken place during a 2023 fan event - although he did admit to being very interested in playing Batman in live-action after previously voicing the iconic hero in The Long Halloween animated features.

"Look, right now nobody's talking about anything. There's a strike going on in the entertainment industry, and until that gets solved, nobody is having conversations about anything. Would I entertain the idea of playing my favorite superhero of all time? Nah, I'm good (laughs)...sounds like a lot of work. I would love it. Sign me up."

As far as we know, The Flash director Andy Muschietti is still attached to helm the DCU reboot, but the project has yet to assign a screenwriter (again, that we know of).

Along with a new take on the Caped Crusader, The Brave and the Bold will introduce a very different Robin in the form of Damian Wayne, a "murderous tween raised by assassins who also happens to be the son Batman never knew he had."<

@BreakTheCode - You'd think WB/DC would not want to have a guaranteed box office bomb after the bombs they've put out with the DCEU.

@dagenspear - Because he’s not white. Bruce Wayne is white.
braunermegda
braunermegda - 5/2/2024, 5:54 PM
@Odekahn - no, bruce Wayne is a fictional character who doesn't exist and can be whatever they want it to be, plus all the backstory from this FICTIONAL character is about him losing his parents, not being white, so if he suddenly was a godamn Korean girl but still became a vigilante because of that, that'd still be the FICTIONAL NOT REAL character you're crying over.

@dagenspear - he doesn't have the build, the chops or the face to play Bruce imo.

@Odekahn - Jim Gordon isn't black and I thought Jeffrey Wright gave a solid performance. Nothing about his race means he won't.

@DeadClunge - Build can be changed. Chops? Maybe, maybe not, not facial structure I think similarly, too round of a face for me, don't know if that could be changed.
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/2/2024, 10:06 PM
@braunermegda - Um. no. Fictional characters are created by people who intended for them to be a particular way, as a creative I find it deeply offensive when fan-fiction writers and creators who have never created a single thing in their life mess with people's life work. If you want a black batman then create your own. I'm black and I think it's insulting that some people feel the only way a person of color can get any recognition is by playing a beloved character who was originally another race. It just showcases a lack of creativity and true understanding of the real issue.
Odekahn
Odekahn - 5/2/2024, 11:28 PM

BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 5/3/2024, 2:47 AM
@dagenspear - Idk man he's a bit of a man mountain. Like naturally he's a big dude. I haven't really seen him in much which os why I don't think he has the chops (he could do, given the chance).
TheSavage
TheSavage - 5/3/2024, 7:48 AM
@braunermegda - I want to see Ryan Gosling as Blade, Danny Trejo as John Stewart, and Jack Black as Black Lightning.
braunermegda
braunermegda - 5/3/2024, 8:48 AM
@Odekahn - no, because being black is part of blade's history, he's dealt with racism many many times and being part of the black community has shaped him. Different from Bruce Wayne who could be any race because he's shaped by losing his parents.
braunermegda
braunermegda - 5/3/2024, 8:51 AM
@TheSavage - I love how you're just yelling how dumb you are. All those characters have waaaaay more than their skin colour to live with. Being black has shaped them for dealing with intolerance, with racism, from where they came. Bruce is a spoiled rich kid who could be white, yellow, brown, purple or anything else as long as his parents dies to traumatize him.
RicksNerdLife
RicksNerdLife - 5/3/2024, 11:14 AM
@braunermegda - Ahhh, so there's the double standard. In any case where the character isn't Caucasian, their ethnicity or race is what shaped them.

The character's are only ever NOT given that same considerations when they're white. Copy.

So, Bruce Wayne couldn't have been shaped by not only being a kid of privilege, but also a WHITE kid of privilege--as *rich* Black people never, EVEEEER face any prejudices in this world.

Do you understand how stupid you sound in trying this desperately to sound woke? I say this as a Liberal who has marched at BLM protests. Sometimes people go so far Left they end up on the Right. You're echoing their talking points in efforts to come across as enlightened.
braunermegda
braunermegda - 5/3/2024, 12:22 PM
@RicksNerdLife - dude, you're making absolutely no sense and honestly, if you're more than 12 just stop saying "woke" and act and talk like a [frick]ing grown up. They can be black and not have anything related to their color skin, like Nick Fury who has been black and white. Doesn't matter to him. He didn't become a spy because someone forbid him to go to a nice school for white only.

The same as this [frick]ing orphan kid. He would've become batman even if he was a miserable vagabond man because he's driven by vengeance because his parents got killed. He doesn't have a background based on his skin color, it's really not that hard to understand.

He's not emotionally gothic sad depressed because his childhood was though because HE WAS BLACK. It was because he was orphan.

Blade, Black Lightning, Black Panther, being black is part of who they are. Bruce Wayne isn't.

If you can't understand something so simple, go on and keep saying it's woke something that once was known as common sense.
TheSavage
TheSavage - 5/3/2024, 12:54 PM
@braunermegda - No no, they are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. That means they aren't real people. Right? Your words.
So race doesn't matter in casting.
RicksNerdLife
RicksNerdLife - 5/3/2024, 1:15 PM
@braunermegda - I made perfect sense if you weren't so stuck on your agenda, dipshit.

What I'm saying, and I'm going to need you to read this real slow: is if there is nothing about their race that makes them who they are, there should be nothing wrong with casting them as they appear in the source material. Yes?

You clearly got caught up on me using woke (which, sorry to say, bitch, is the best way to describe what you're attempting to be), that you glossed over the most important aspect of what I was saying:

You hold a double standard, a hypocrisy, so long as it gives you what YOU want. I don't know your race or background, but I'm going to assume not white. You're totally cool with bastardizing a character, so long as it isn't whitewashing a character that is a person of color. THAT, is a double standard.

A character turned Black automatically has to delve into the world and society that we live in. So no, it's NOT just Bruce Wayne with a different complexion. It would become Bruce Wayne, facing the prejudices of being a Black, rich businessman in a corporate world full of powerful rich white men. And that is a different narrative than most of us want to tackle or watch.

Just as alllll those characters you listed, their blackness becomes ingrained in whobthey are, so too would the already established character that you've decided to inexplicable make a POC.

Get it now, dumbass?

@RicksNerdLife - jesus christ, I give up. Trying to put sense in a dumb mind is impossible and I ain't wasting any more time on it. Keep whatever you want, and keep being proud of being stupid, it's very amusing for the rest of us who is old enough to understand basic things.

braunermegda
braunermegda - 5/3/2024, 4:00 PM
