The movie is magically as we all know, however there is so much more substance in the book. This is usually the case with novel to film adaptations, so where does that leave Jurassic Park IV? Well, while Jurassic Park will always be know as one of the top films in history, its sequels are widely know as sub par and will not be. Can next years’ entry bring the magic back of the original? Here are some ways it can.
1. Drop the IV
Think of an interesting title that will define the movie, other than dinosaur claws scratching a number. Even a simple Return to Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park: Chaos Theory sounds and looks better than a roman numeral.
2. Use Isla Nublar
This is where the best film in the series was set and to see those locations again would be nostalgic. The cars, the tracks, the fences, the Discovery Center. That alone would have audiences intrigued right away. Which brings us to the plot.
3. The Embryo Can
When Nedry dropped it before the Dilophosaurus had a meal, everyone thought something would come from that embryo can. Maybe InGens rival company BioSyn sends an elite group to get the can and start their own park in the States. Make the team charismatic. And make that adventure the beginning of the movie. The path and search to the can and their encounters with the dinosaurs from all the movies, not just a few. Of course there are casualties but they do find it and make it back to the mainland. Not sure what state, but Biosyn could be trying to create their own theme park of dinosaurs, and succeeding. Which brings us to the rest of the characters.
4. Have the characters from the original movie
We know Dr. Allen Grant, Dr. Ian Malcolm, and Dr. Ellie Sattler would never go back to those islands. But maybe the new park is in the state they live and the dinosaurs break out. Or maybe the park has been having much success and everything seems to be going well and they are invited as honorary guests, and that’s when it happens. Also be sure to include John Hammond, Lex and Tim.
5. The Dinosaurs
First and foremost, bring the Dilophosaurus back. Have the T. Rex back as the main predator. Make the Raptors look real like in the first movie. But also, have several dinosaurs, to show the scope of the creations. All the dinos from the first three should be included. Have each dinosaur have their focus scene, like in the first Jurassic Park. Not fleeting. After all, that’s really what we’re there to see, right?

IF you involve the embryo can then the movie has to be during the events of Jurassic Park. The embryo can only had coolant for 36 hours. While there's nothing wrong with doing a "mid-quel" I don't think the studio's would go for it. There's always a need in their eyes to push the story forward.

Back in 2003 I wrote a Jurassic Park 4 that I'm still pretty proud of. It basically dealt with the systematic destruction of the islands, with most of it taking place on Nublar. I reread Jurassic Park and The Lost World two-times over before writing it, and honestly borrowed a few great action scenes from those two that weren't in the movies. I used Billy Brennan from Jurassic Park 3 as the main character because like you said, the three main movie characters would NEVER, EVER go back again. I also had Tim on unwittingly on the side of the badguys. It also involved a lot of the international intrique that the books dealt with. All in all, if it had one major fault it was overly complicated because I refused to lazily write my way around the various holes they dug themselves, including the implication that Isla Nublar was destroyed following the events of JP.

Dodgson is definitely a great option for the villain. To this day, I do not understand why TLW:JP didn't stick with him. Like i said, I had him con Tim Murphy into working with him to steal eggs from the islands. (Basically his plot from TLW book)

But another small note, Sir Richard Attenborough is practically on deaths door, so there's no way he could be involved with a new movie.

But hey, I enjoy a good JP write-up, and am looking forward to JP4.

Embryo can is a good idea but I can't agree with bringing back ANY of the original cast. Move on.

There are a lot of problems with the embryo canister story, The coolent only lasted 36 hours, the can was buried in the mud,and no one knows about it besides Dodgeson and his people.

The canister plot point could've worked had they made it the focus of the Lost World, right after the first movie. But by now, I think that ship has long sailed. Interesting nonetheless. The next Jurassic Park HAS to be on Isla Nublar, although it could be difficult because Hammond tells Malcolm in Lost World that a hurricane destroyed the entire facility. Could be cool to see the ruined remains of the theme park though. As much as I'd like them to, the original cast really can't return. ESPECIALLY any of the characters from the 3rd movie, which if they're smart, the 4th film will act like that movie never even happened. Honestly I think it's too late to do another sequel, but I'll reserve judgment until more details come out
