JURASSIC WORLD Director Colin Trevorrow Weighs In On A Possible R-Rated Dino Movie Down The Line

The Jurassic World trilogy recently wrapped up with Dominion, and filmmaker Colin Trevorrow has now weighed in on the possibility of a future movie heading down the R-Rated route. Read on for details!

The Jurassic World trilogy has grossed billions of dollars at the box office, so the franchise has quite clearly bounced back from those disappointing Jurassic Park sequels. Unfortunately, reviews for Dominion were somewhat tepid, so now feels like the right time to take this series to some exciting new places.

The popular Battle at Big Rock short proved there are different approaches that can be taken with these dinosaurs, and a lot of fans would love to see a horror movie set in this world, for example.

That sort of approach to the iconic property would likely need to be R-Rated, as would any adult-orientated take on the Jurassic series. Even upping the violence and gore would be welcomed by many, but filmmaker Colin Trevorrow wasn't quite so sure when asked by Collider (via SFFGazette.com) if that's a viable next step for the beloved franchise.

"It's hard to answer that question. I don't know," he responded. "I do know that if we made 'A Quiet Place,' if we made a hard R really scary version, potentially very contained, I know I'd want to see that movie. If a parent took their kid to that movie and horrified them for life, I know that would be a problem."

"Look, I don't want to put any cuffs on whoever has a vision for this in the future. All I know is that people love dinosaurs, people love movies with dinosaurs in them, and I know people love the world that ['Jurassic Park' author] Michael Crichton created," Trevorrow added. "The reason why there are dinosaurs and humans in the same place, that sci-fi idea, it's a brilliant idea. From there, I feel like someone else should come to us."

Trevorrow recently made it clear he's not keen on the prospect of a crossover with the Fast & Furious franchise, but he at least seems open to exploring the Jurassic franchise with an R-Rating.

That's an approach with a lot of potential, and something along the lines of A Quiet Place could be absolutely epic. There's even a chance that we could head into the distant future, especially now that dinosaurs roam the Earth freely. A post-apocalyptic setting could be pretty good fun, right?

Don't see it ever happening. With the amount of CGI budget it would need, I can't see it being cost effective as an R rated film. You wouldn't get enough box office return to turn a profit.

@thewanderer - I think it depends on the scale. Fury Road, BR 2049, both Deadpools, Logan, etc. we’re all R rated franchise movies with pretty beefy budgets. If it’s a self contained story with just a couple Dinos I think it could definitely be done for cheap.

Could even be an interesting TV project. Look at all the VFX on The Boys for example. That’s a hard TV-MA, and I feel like the Jurassic Park name would definitely draw in an audience

What could perfectly fulfill that role is a Dino crisis remake. Come on, Capcom!

@Repian - now that’s a match made in heaven. I used to play Turok for hours on my N64, I would love to see a film adaptation

I just hope whatever comes next revitalizes Jurassic park the same way Bumblebee and Prey revitalized their franchises respectively. I say this as someone who enjoyed both Fallen kingdom and Dominion. World was good, don't @ me.

I’ll just watch Carnosaur. And Robot Werewolf. Anyone remember that straight to PPV movie about time traveling where they messed up the past and now there’s dinosaurs everywhere?

The way for Jurassic franchise to go is to take it to a post apocalyptic world. The people on the Jurassic Island are somehow among the few survivors on earth. When they return to the outside world they try not to allow the dinosaurs to escape or they may kill the remaining survivors. This would raise the stakes because now with few humans left on earth dinosaurs could kill off the rest of the human race.

That one short movie they made in promotion for this (Big Rock I think), but as a full length r-rated movie would be fun

I thought battle of bad rock was a sign of what was to come in dominion but instead we got a whole bunch of humans talking and some absurd locust storyline nobody cared about.

Come to think of it I dont think I like a single Colin Treverrow movie. As someone said before me he suuuucks

As a kid who was obsessed with dinosaurs, it would be inhuman to deny kids a dinosaur movie. I don’t care. It ‘ain’t right.

How many more times can you retell the same story?

-Scientist invest something everyone knows is going to lead to something stupid.
-Said stupid thing happens and villains/characters act surprised.
-Dinosaurs wreak havoc and kill humans, and humans act shocked that dinosaurs are acting like dinosaurs.
-They face-off against a giant dinosaur predator, and survive.

Rinse and repeat as much as needed.

It's all the same because the premise is the same for all of them. I stopped watching after Jurassic World.

Just stop making these films or do something drastically different with the property.

Maybe a Jurassic Planet where dinosaurs passed a virus that eleminated 95% of the human population, and the remaining humans have to survive on an Earth reclaimed by dinosaurs.
