Regardless of what you thought of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, one can agree that it was very ambitious in its themes, tackling ideas that have not been touched in the dino-filled franchise so far. It is also undeniable that the sequel was much darker than its predecessor, and arguably is the most tonally mature in the franchise.
Jurassic World, which was released in 2015, provided much more comedic relief than its sequel. This primaily came through the character of Lowery, portrayed by New Girl's Jake Johnson. According to Fallen Kingdom writer Colin Trevorrow, Lowery was part of the film's development early on, but opted to introduce the character of Franklin instead.
Lowery was Franklin’s character because he potentially could have done that job…But he didn’t quite have the same spirit. We did like the idea of [Zia and Franklin] being pretty idealistic young people who are activists who really believe in the cause that Claire believes in. I wasn’t really able to shoehorn [Lowery] into that, he’s kind of a cynical guy.
