Universal Pictures had to scramble to find a new director for its upcoming Jurassic World movie after the recent departure of David Leitch, and the studio has now enlisted a filmmaker who has quite a bit of experience on creature features.

According to THR, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Creator director Gareth Edwards is in final negotiations to helm the movie. As previously reported, David Koepp, who penned the original 1993 Jurassic Park and its sequel, 1997’s Jurassic Park: The Lost World, is currently working on the script.

Edwards' first film was the acclaimed Monsters, and he went on to launch Legendary's MonsterVerse with 2014's Godzilla.

Despite word only reaching us very recently, the project is already said to be "deep in development." The studio may even be considering a 2025 release date.

Plot details are still under wraps, but the movie will reportedly launch a “new Jurassic era” with an all-new storyline, which would seem to indicate that Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with the original JW crew played by Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, will not be returning.

Frank Marshall, the veteran producer who oversaw the Jurassic World trilogy, is back on board, as is another Jurassic vet, Patrick Crowley. Spielberg will executive produce via his Amblin Entertainment banner.

Leitch was in talks to direct in early February, before parting ways with the film just a few days later. Apparently, "it became clear to Leitch that his creative input would be minimal due to the project’s fast-tracked status and how the producers wanted to wield a stronger hand after the experiences of Jurassic World: Dominion."

Dominion director Colin Trevorrow will not be involved, but he did share his ideas for a potential follow-up last year.

"The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs," said the filmmaker. "For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?"

Do you have any interest in another Jurassic World movie? What do you make of Edwards signing on to direct? Drop us a comment down below.

"Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live and hunt alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history's most fearsome creatures."

Well, last one should have been about humans and dinosaurs co-existing struggles, instead we had this weird locusts plot, so...

@JayBarrick - well, we did get animal trafficking. Think that's something that would happen for real if dinos were released in the wild.

That should've been it though. The locust plot was weird, but so was the corporate conspiracy, international espionage and human cloning

@bkmeijer1 - Agreed

There were bits a pieces of Dominion that had some definite potential, the Dino trafficking being one of them. The issue was there was too much stuff being crammed in there for the sake of ending the trilogy. It was like it was written by 15 different people.

@JayBarrick - what, you saying people watching a jurassic park movie don't wanna see giant locusts eat corn?/s
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/21/2024, 2:25 PM
@vegetaray - that was definitely the case. Felt like a trilogy's worth of story got crammed into one movie.

Think that if they wanted to do the corporate conspiracy, they should've just tied it to the animal trafficking and leave out the whole locust thing.

Doesn't matter who you get to direct it, unless the ones responsible for the previous 3 film are gone entirely, I ain't watching it.

This is promising news.

It’s tough to think where the franchise should go from here, but without a reboot, they are slaves to the continuity.

Edward’s might be the right person to right the ship. The core theme of this series (at least the original Jurassic Park) is to explore the dangers of science doing things it can but shouldn’t.

I know the last 2 movies were a mess, but human cloning and messing with the genetics of other animals is in line with this theme.

I would say lay into this stuff and evolve the series into full on sci fi. Governments and private entities have dinosaurs, human clones, and genetically modified animals at their disposal. Humanity is in a tough spot (especially after that last movie). Make it crazy, weird, and dystopian. It’s really the only way forward at this point.

the world ones all sucked ballbags, get a new team of writers. they are the real problem. Also deal back all the dino roaring, creatures are scarier when they hunt in silents.

Okay now I'm even more on board than with David Leitch. Think Edwards has a great style that Jurassic World could benefit from. Just hope it's a smaller scale story again

Nick Offerman to play an old Nevada Sheriff and Brett Gelman to play a climatologist who predicts migratory movements of dinosaurs due to climate change. He affirms that the city will be the transit point for numerous species.

@Repian - this is such a specific take, that it kinda feels like you already know what it's about. And if you don't, I could see you come close

@Repian - I could absolutely get down with that. If anything the “World” trilogy maybe went too big with their films. Since the dinosaurs are out in the world now this feels like it would be perfect in that it folds that into our real world. It would also give them a chance to bring a touch of the horror element back by making the film smaller scale.

Yeah I dig it.

Gosh Dang! What the heck else can they come up with something that's fresh?! I mean, not only have dinosaurs appeared in several other films over the years (like Kong and Land of the Lost), but there's been six JP films and they progressively got worse (I did like JP3 a lot tho).

Whats next? The government figures out how to mind control the dinos and then arms them with artillery for battle? Or, how about "Jurassic Space: The Domination of the aliens of Mars.

Give this IP like a 10-to-15-year break. Then, a whole new generation of kids can be introduced to JP.

I enjoyed the recent trilogy! I think this new movie will be in good hands with Gareth Edwards. I do have the same concerns as some of you, though. "The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs..." So, JP7 will expound one plot point that was barely touched, in JP6? That's the ONLY direction I can see the franchise going for at least one more movie.

Good director but he needs good writers to deliver a better movie than Jurassic World 2 and 3. I hope he tries to match the quality and epicness of the first JP.

@Alucard28 - Good thing they got the writer of the first two movies then.

@mattcoz - Yeah, even though many people don't like JP2 I think is fun and way better than JP3, JW2 and JW3.

The first Jurassic World is OK but not as epic as the original JP of course.

No more kids! There do not need to be kids or teenagers in every Jurrasic movie; please stop that damn trend already!

@IAmAHoot - sadly, the kids are part of all of the JP movies. I think they nailed it with the first JP.

Do Mad Max but with dinosaurs.

bkmeijer1 - 2/21/2024, 2:28 PM
@Ryguy88 - I like that idea a lot. Have it set 50 years or something in the future too, with dinos having become the dominant species again (and having [frick]ed up ecosystems because they are invasive species)

@bkmeijer1 - lol anything decent said here was probably just stolen from somewhere else
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/22/2024, 8:19 AM
@Ryguy88 - most likely. Pretty much everything is influenced by something. I like to think I have my opinion too, but that wouldn't exist either without whatever I interact with.

Anyway, Mad Max with dinosaurs would be cool.
