Producer Kathleen Kennedy Updates On JURASSIC PARK IV

Speaking with Coming Soon while promoting the Blu-Ray release of E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, producer Kathleen Kennedy offers an update on the long in-development Jurassic Park IV. Last we heard, the fourth installment in the highly successful film series was set to be written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes), and producer Frank Marshall suggested that we could see the film released in a couple of years. Kennedy confirms that the film is currently being written, and she talks about the expectations in keeping franchises going as well as finding the right story.

"It's really hard to keep these things going when there's an expectation and a desire by the public and the audience to keep certain franchises going," Kennedy says. "As filmmakers, we often sit there going, 'Okay. We have to answer the question, 'Why do another one?'' If you can't answer that question, you shouldn't be doing it. It's tough. We're trying to come up with a story that makes sense and isn't going to disappoint people and is, hopefully, going to get people excited and reinvigorate the franchise. We've got to start with a script and the story."

No director is currently attached to helm Jurassic Park IV. Steven Spielberg has ruled out any directorial involvement, and although Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, Captain America: The First Avenger) has expressed interest in directing the follow-up, it doesn't sound like he will be involved. Who do you want to see direct the next Jurassic Park movie?

Spielberg should do it to make up for the lost world. You think he'd want to redeem himself a little with this franchise

i watched jurassic park the other day on blu-ray,very good film a modern classic.

especially the fantastic t-rex attack scene,i notice the cgi is abit dated by today's standards so jurassic park 4 should look amazing.

So, how long before we get a "Five directors who could direct JP4" poll?

I love the first like the other 2 (i actually saw the second one before i ever saw the first. The 2 T-Rexs puching the trailer off a cliff is the best scene of the trilogy) but do we really need another one? If they make another it better be like King Kong on crack.

Jurassic Park was my childhood. I loved the first two but the third one was a complete bastardization of the franchise. (Is that even a word?) Either they do it right or they don't do it at all.

J3 was the best of the franchise. I just want to know why Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are not writing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Glad there is a new JURASSIC PARK in development, one of my favorites, truly classic film.

Hopefully SAM NEIL comes back, LOVE THAT GUY.

Jurassic Park never needed a sequel, but we're gonna have three of them soon. And they're all shit.

Let go of the franchise.

@catman

It's Johnston. And be grateful to him for pulling off a character as silly as Cap. I love Cap, one of my favorite superheroes. But he's silly as all [frick]ing hell, and Johnston pulled it off.

I would love a prequel about a younger John Hammond and his foundation of in gen and the idea and eventual conceptualization of Jurassic park, I think that we be much more interesting than simply a rehash of the first three

More of Hollywood needs to read this quote and take heed of it before making remake after remake and unnecessary sequel after sequel..

"we often sit there going, 'Okay. We have to answer the question, 'Why do another one?'' If you can't answer that question, you shouldn't be doing it."

Peter Jackson is a great director, and a good stoyteller. He would be a good choice for JP4.

Please please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't these based on best selling books? That being said, hasn't the 4th book been out forever. If so, this article is dumb...if I'm right. Which I don't have time to research right now but...dumb. I'd see the movie of course because it has dinosaurs and who doesn't like the JP theme song?

jessepostal - 9/29/2012, 10:19 AM
there are only two novels, so the article is not dumb:)

Preferrably Steven King. I'd take Steve Barron for pretty much anything genre.

Yeah, the first two films were based on Michael Crichton's novels. The third film was entirely original, and the fourth will be too.

I think, for this movie, they should use material from the novels that wasn't used in the previous films.

It would be nice to see some feathered dinosaurs for a change, not counting the male raptors for JP3.

I think either Rupert Wyatt or Joe Johnson would be a good choice.
bhorwith22
bhorwith22 - 9/29/2012, 11:21 AM
Perhaps James Cameron would be a good choice.
PaulRom
PaulRom - 9/29/2012, 12:00 PM
Cameron would be interesting. He said before that he was close to directing the first movie, so he might be interested in directing a sequel. Although, since he'll be busy with Avatar sequels for the next few years and JP4 aiming for a 2014/2015 release, I don't see it happening.
I'd go with Wyatt or Matt Reeves. I like the idea of Louis Leterrier too. Maybe Gareth Edwards if Godzilla is successful.

as long as the dinos really [frick] people up and there is a good story ill be happy , cut out the famil crap make it more scientist/military based and keep it that way . Little children running around not being killed is stupid. Honestly children would be the first to be killed off due to them lacking so many skills when it comes to survival and weapon training. How is it 3 kids survive and all the guys with training and weapons get taken out ? It should be realistic like the opening of lost world where the little girl is killed because she is so naive.

The Jurassic Park movies have had no foundation to them. It was just a visual effects spectacle. All three movies seemed like a cash grab. Making a fourth one would just be more of the same.

T-Rex has to be the main Dino... if they use Spino again i wont even bother.... Jurassic park 3 sucked a giant big one...
hehemata
hehemata - 9/30/2012, 4:28 AM
are they gonna use the modern iterations of dinosaurs?

cuz our understanding of dinosaurs now isn't what it was 10 years ago, specifically not the way they were portrayed in the first 3 movies

dinosaurs have been acamedically accpeted to have feathers, or a primitive form of it... and that isn't very scary at all

will they use them?
