How Legendary Pictures Can Solve The Godzilla/King Kong Size Problem

When the reports came out that King Kong and Godzilla could possibly share a screen together and do battle, many people were excited, but there was just one problem they couldn’t get over...The size!

When it was reported that a possible King Kong vs. Godzilla film was in the works, many jokes started to surface regarding the size difference between the two. Some people said Godzilla would step on Kong without noticing, while others said that Godzilla would pick King Kong up with one hand and throw him to space. Pretty much everyone else who didn’t make jokes, pitied the “king.”

So, how can we fix this? How can we have a fight between the two (a fair fight), with both monsters at equal size? Here’s my take on all this.

A few days ago, Tom Hiddleston (who stars in Kong: Skull Island, confirmed that the film would be a period piece, and a rumored synopsis suggest that the film will take place some years after 1933. With that said, if this information turns out to be true, Kong: Skull Island will take place long before the events of the Godzilla 2014 film!

Now that we have the time difference out of the way, let’s get down to how we can fix the size (And no, it does not involve a mecha-suit)!

Whoever the main characters are in the film, they will go “Skull Island” in hopes to find a radioactive chemical. A chemical that can only be found on Skull Island and Skull Island alone. These scientist who venture there think that this chemical could be the cure to many diseases, make new medicines, and all that good science-y stuff! Even though they’re not quite sure what this chemical can do exactly, they don’t really care because they’re mad scientist, they just want to experiment on it!

“We're mad scientists. We’re monsters buddy, and we've got to own it. Make a stand.”

-Tony Stark In Avengers: Age of Ultron

So, they think this is going to be an easy trip. In and out. They grab it and go. However, while they’re on their adventure, they run into King Kong - who, at this time will be his original size. After this, Kong battles some dinosaurs, kills some humans, blah, blah, blah!

Just then, near the end of the film Kong battles something or someone. Military men, or more dinosaurs would do the trick. He could even battle Arnold Schwarzenegger for all I care! At this point, it doesn't matter! As he battling, he fighting near a DEEP crater. Something like the image seen below, but with many trees, and grass, and stuff around it.

And the bottom of this crater is filled with the radioactive chemicals that these scientist we’re looking for! Kong eventually falls into this crater, and supposedly dies. With a lot of people dead, the people withdraw (without the chemicals), and they never want to go to this island again.
*Credits roll*

AFTER CREDIT SCENE TIME!

The camera pans to the crater. A crater that was deep enough to stack over 25 King Kongs or more. Unexpectedly, a stupendously large gorilla hand reaches up and grabs the edge of the crater! Bam, fades to black!

These weird chemicals would be the cause of King Kong's transformation, and his dramatic increase in size! And that gorilla thought he had to avoid these “dangerous” chemical all those years! Kong eventually goes deep underground to harness radiation to survive (just as Godzilla and the Mutos did in Gareth Edwards’ film), and he never awakes or arises until the events of the Godzilla v. King Kong film.

What do you think? Do you think this would be a reasonable explanation for Kong’s sudden size increase? Would you be able to live with this scenario if it were to happen? If not, what ideas do YOU have? I would tell you all to sound off in the comment section, but I have a feeling you’re going to do it anyway.

Thanks for the read!

They just need to feed the original King Kong whatever the Hulk-ish King Louie from the new Jungle Book movie is eating. ^^'

Good article. I think that Kong should be diff from Godzilla though, at least in terms of origin. Whatever it is on skull island that makes everything crazy big should be explained in the skull island film, then a scene exactly like what you proposed but (I hope) a touch more mysticism. If they do it right they can do a science (zilla) vs magic kinda thing and the contrast would be cool. Having him just be another muto just seems lazy to me. Like maybe there is a curse on skull island for some reason. I would even rather it be some huge meteorite at the center of skull island that makes him bigger. Just not radiation. Let Godzilla have his own origin.

All I know is it's probably going to make...

Warner Brothers is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. This whole idea is stupid. Stetting up a cinematic universe is good and all when there are many characters. But when there are just two then it won't work since the tone of the movie monster franchises is just too different. Godzilla's rogue gallery is deep enough so that there is no need to go this route. If they wanted to do some kind of team up then it makes more sense to go with Gamera who is also a reptile and has essentially the same atomic breath power as which means his origins could easily be similar to Godzilla.

(But just to play along, the way to solve the size issue with King Kong is to make a new King Kong a distant ancestral version of the Kong that died on the Empire State Building. He could live in the Himalayas in areas where it is hard for humans to reach which is why he had never been discovered. The radioactive makes things grow stuff is too cliched as well as far fetched.)

Now let's get Pacific Rim involved as well and we are laughing.

Personally, I think there are a couple of ways to solve this. 1. Being there was a baby Kong on the island, one that was left behind by his Mother the first Kong. He was raised and being a male is larger than most.

Secondly, maybe have Kong's be like a pride with a male and a group of females so they all attack at once.

The size for me isn't the issue. The Atmoic Breath would have this over within minutes matches sizes or not

Gareth Edward's Godzilla simply doesnt fit in a world with King Kong. The tone is just too realistic, it makes no sense. The only way is to reboot Godzilla.

The "monkey eats radiactive chemicals so becomes big" thing sounds like a cartoon.

it's a good seeding of an idea. With some more felshing out and some real script work it could definitley work.

What is the hostility to this idea?!? It's not just two monsters!! It's also Rodan, Ghidora, Mothra, Mechanikong, Gigan, [frick]ing every other Toho Kaiju!!! This is not a difficult thing to understand. Also, my money is on them trying to get the rights to Gamera to make a Gamera versus Godzilla versus Kong. Also as for the size, why do we need to aknowledge it? Skull Island is not King Kong. He won't be climbing the empire state building like he did in the original. This is a different movie and a different story just using the character of King Kong. The original King Kong versus Godzilla didn't acknowledge the size because it didn't matter it doesn't need a context King Kong is already a giant monster!!!!

This is freaking brilliant! I love the idea. Personally they need to make Kong bigger not Zilla (No not that damn 1998 creature thing) smaller. At the end of the day I really hope that they don't attempt to move forward with Pacific Rim cause I really don't want to see Godzilla fighting men in machines.

I like this idea. I say keep it simple. No need to spend a lot of time discussing or caring why he got big. In this world of large monsters created by radiation whats the problem with the same thing happening to King Kong.

In the Godzilla reboot last year Godzilla is an ancient creature that is large because he is from a time when the earth was more radioactive so I think that they should have King Kong be the same. The creatures from skull island should be ancient monsters from the same era that Godzilla is from. They can make King Kong larger that way making him a little bit different from the King Kong from the classic movie or the Peter Jackson remake.
