GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Review - There's Fun To Be Had When Titans Clash, But The Rest Falls Flat

Reviews for Godzilla: King of the Monsters have been mixed, but are the critics being too harsh on director Mike Dougherty's follow up to Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot? Unfortunately, we don't think so...

"Nobody goes to see a Godzilla movie for the human characters!"

You're going to see this (or something similar) expressed a lot whenever the major problems with Godzilla: King of the Monsters are brought up, and while it may well be true, what you go to a movie for and what you end up getting are very different things.

One of the main criticisms of Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot was that the titular beast himself was barely featured, and, to be fair to Mike Dougherty's sequel, there is much more monster action. Unfortunately, whenever the focus shifts to any of the numerous human characters - and they also get a lot of screen time - the drama falls completely flat and tedium sets in.

The cast does its best (if there's a standout, it's Vera Farmiga), but the script is so rife with cliches, exposition, and eye-rolling attempts at humor that there's no room for anyone to shine. Several main characters also make some bafflingly stupid decisions which rob any potential dramatic moments of their power.

On the plus side, when the titans do clash there is some of fun to be had, and seeing Big G, Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra throw down is certainly not without spectacle. The final fight involving all four behemoths, in particular, is brilliantly visualized and should make kaiju fans very happy.

There are some stunning visuals and the monster mayhem doesn't disappoint, but is a half-decent script and some emotional investment to accompany the action too much to ask for? If you're happy to sit through scene after scene of utter nonsense to get to the next sequence with giant CGI creatures biting each other then Godzilla: King of the Monsters may be for you, but everyone else be warned: this sequel is a colossal slog.

None of that answers the question, can Kong take Godzilla.

@Forthas - i've had this debt and it shouldn't be so that Kong stands a chance IMO .... especially with the atomic breathe

@knocturnalzen10 -
@KingCipher -

I agree with you...but just wait...there will be some convoluted way to make Kong seem like he can...like his fur is naturally fire proof.

At that point the WB monster universe will have "jumped the shark."

@Forthas - Kong has a few things like mobility , thumbs to pick things, and raw strengthen .... i just think it gets nullified if he gets hit with that tail once and zilla has the opt to hit him with the breathe.

I'm telling you: If they could make Godzilla and all the other monsters talk then we wouldnt need the humans in the movie.

@DVonShakari - They have Transformers and they talk but we see more humans in that too.

Oh crap...

"but the script is so rife with... eye-rolling attempts at humor"

More "humor"...this is what happens when people cheer on slapstick comedy in these CBM's and action flicks instead of taking the subject seriously and using humor is subtle ways.

if i can watch +40yrs of English dubbed Godzilla movies from Japan, then i'm pretty sure i can watch some crappy plot points to this movie to see what will probably be some of the best visual and fight scenes ever

@MotherGooseUPus - its weird, I've seen some reviews praising this film and giving it 5/5 stars, and then I've seen others such as Ror's that don't speak highly of the movie. Quite the dichotomy of reviews. Feel like this movie wasn't made for everyone.

@HeavyMetal4Life - agreed dude. however, as a life long Godzilla fan myself, this movie was made for people like me. i'll be there in Imax on sunday, enjoying what will be my 2nd fav movie this year.

“If you're happy to sit through scene after scene of utter nonsense to get to the next sequence with giant CGI creatures biting each other then Godzilla: King of the Monsters may be for you”

That basically describes every 8-10 year old boys mind set during the late 80s-90s watching Godzilla films.

So it will be fun to revist those days!

I hope the human characters are bearable, cause it sounds like we're going to spend a lot of time with them again. Maybe they need to get rid of them next time.

Goes to show you, if they wanted human drama they should have included the COSMOS...

I don’t get what us as American audiences want from a Godzilla movie. None of you are real fans and it sounds like you’re watching these movies for the human characters

Look on the bright side: Plenty of bathroom breaks, step out to check your messages and social media, have a smoke or vape, get a drink or snack, have a nap.

I'll watch this on a long flight for free a few months from now. That way, I can skip around the talky parts, nap, or tune out.

Watch any of the old Toho Godzilla films. The dialog was the worst but that's what made it great. When an alien tells Mechagodzilla to kill Godzilla Through a CB microphone that's the pure greatness of a Godzilla film. Nobody goes to a Godzilla movie for the humans. The humans are just there for campy acting and dialog.

I never cared about the human shit when it comes to Godzilla. Sounds like this movie is giving me what I want giant monster battles.
