Mark Julian Reviews CHRONICLE

So is it the American Akira? Does it live up to all the hype? The short version is yes. For the long version hit the jump and I'll tell you why Chronicle is the first must see movie of 2012. Plus I'll examine whether Josh Trank is the right man for Fantastic Four.

Josh Trank Chronicle Movie

By: Mark Julian

The Chronicle marketing machine started off with a collective sigh from the masses, "Not another found-footage movie", they cried. Like many, that was also my first reaction to the trailer for Josh Trank's take on the polarizing genre. Face it. What was once a novelty has now become common place and the film industry now pumps out just as many found footage movies as remakes. Because of public distaste, Chronicle starts behind the 8-ball. The usual suspects in the movie-critic world were heading into advanced screenings for Chronicle with trepidation. Surprisingly, they emerged with nothing but praise for the movie and really spearheaded public interest. How could a movie that combines two of the most over-saturated film genre's in Hollywood possibly be any good? Plainly stated, it shine's in it's naturalistic portrayal of an outcast teen and how he copes with his decaying everyday surroundings but suddenly, inexplicably is given the ability to completely reverse his fortunes. I say the film has a natural feel because Trank doesn't beat you over the head with psychological overtures, instead the aforementioned theme plays out in the background of a rapidly moving picture about a lonely, outcast teenager. The film progresses in such a way that the smart moviegoer will almost certainly pick up on the subliminal messages while those with their thinking-cap turned off can simply enjoy the spectacle of high school teenagers flying and moving objects with their mind. Also present, are standard movie themes of social awkwardness, the corrupting influence of power, high school popularity/angst/naivety, and an abusive father. However, Trank doesn't attempt to direct a message about any of these themes, he simply lets them unfold and leaves it to the audience to draw their own conclusions.

The acting talent assembled is phenomenal.  Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, and Alex Russell all turn in fine performances.  It also helps that the script from Max Landis really captures the idiosyncrasies of teenage society.   However, Dane DeHaan is will definitely be the breakout star of this picture.  Unquestionably, it was a smart decision by 20th Century Fox to go with unknowns as that further allows the audience to immerse themselves in the movie.  Any name-recognized actor would completely undermine the film's realism and remind audiences that you're in the theater watching a film.  Not saying it wouldn't be possible for a Liam Hemsworth or Garrett Hedlund to star, it just would've taken a lot more effort to achieve the same effect.

My only detraction from the movie was the father-son relationship between DeHaan and Michael Kelly.  At times, it was very heavy-handed and contrived in such a way to obviously move the plot forward.   Still it's a minor annoyance in an otherwise, stellar film.

As for the Akira comparison, I personally feel that's a very superficial assessment. Yes, both movies posses a beta-male teenager given telekinetic powers who subsequently goes on a power trip but that's where the similarities end.  At it's heart, Akira is a movie that's about the relationship between two friends, and while that theme is present in Chronicle, it's not the main ingredient.  Chronicle is DeHaan's story to tell from start to finish.

As for the Fantastic Four reboot rumors surrounding Trank, I think he definitely deserves a shot after his wonderful cinematic debut.  Fox may have a serious talent on their hands and at this point, it'll be hard to obstruct Trank from any path he wishes to venture down.  While the box-office will understandably be slow due to the Super Bowl, don't be surprised if Chronicle is the #1 movie next weekend as well.  One thing I think is apparent from Chronicle is that Trank has a talent for crafting a film through the lens of a specific, individual character. So if your hoping for that Fantastic Four movie told through the eyes of Reed Richards, then Trank might be your man.

Chronicle is a film that will appeal to almost any moviegoer and even warrants a repeat watch as there are reportedly little nuances that will become apparent upon a second viewing [I'll definitely be watching again to see if I pick up on anything].  It's a film that will definitely lead to a lively debate with your movie companions as you leave the theater and that's about as good as any movie can hope for.

Good movie for a first-time filmmaker. It's like Hancock without all that lovey-dovey fallen angel/alien storyline.

I hear its a good movie, a "found footage" movie, but the main question I have how much of it is "shaky" camera. I walked out of cloverfield with nausea. I haven't seen one comment about that particular aspect of the movie. thnx

Spoiler Alert.

What was unacceptable was that they killed the black guy first AGAIN. That was a completely unnecessary part of the film, as if they were trying to find an excuse to kill Steve Montgomery off. That really pissed me off and from that point in the film on I just lost interest.

SO disappointed they ruined a perfectly good movie with that

It look interesting, I will probably see it on netflix just because I don't have a lot of time to go to the theatre unless its something i really wanna see. The only thing I noticed from the trailers is that the CG doesn't look great. It doesn't look bad just not great. But still looks good.

lol, I've not heard so many people talk themselves out of going to see a damn good movie for ridiculous reasons! The special FX? For crissakes its got a budget of $12 million and the FX are ten billion times more effective than films costing ten times as much that most of you would happily stuff in the pockets of large corporations more interested in turning out a movie that has more in common with a theme ride than an actual quality film.

It's probably a good thing for the sensible people who go to the cinema and help fund originality like this that idiots stay at home waiting for good movies to turn up on TV and wish they saw it on the big screen later, the twerps!

Whoever doesn't see this movie it truly missing out. This was one inventive, exciting, and somewhat disturbing film. To be quite honest, I found it more enjoyable than Captain America & Thor. And this was made with peanuts compared to their budgets. This movie shows you what a talented cast and a director with a little ingenuity can do. Btw, I know this is considered a "found footage" movie, but the truth is no footage was actually found. The way that scene was shot or viewed was just genius.

@SonOfStarKiller - That's because IT WAS a far better movie than Captain America and Thor, you aint lying! Easily among one of the best made films of the year so far and definitely most original.

@113 Yeah, that part almost ruined it for me too. For the obvious reason of course, but also because there's no real progression to that point. Steve would have been badass in a two on one show down. Good movie though.

Spoilerish Alert!

I found the movie really enjoyable. They got away with using a sort of found footage type filming by using telekinisis to float the camera and show the entire group. Using security footage and random civilian footage was also a great idea. I like how they went away with the teenagers gaining superpowers and becoming crime fighters and used it like a real teenager would, every normal person would mess with people like they did:)

areally good movie that was ruined for me with the 'found footage' angle. utterly unnecessary and I kept getting pulled out of the movie time and time again.

for example imagine if jurassic park was 'found footaged' you wouldn't buy it because no SANE people would continue filming if they are being chased by a t-rex.

great performances ruined by a POINTLESS gimmick

I hope the 'found footage' craze dies a horrible death and I will not watch another movie that has it.

@spiderneil The found footage angle was handled excellently. I never felt confined to it. They created situations where the footage looked like a normal directed film. It's also a nice touch how they showed the quality of his cameral compared to the girlsin the beginning of the film.

@ neobaggins

*spoiler alert*

the bit where the girl gets lifted into the air inside the but continues to film didin't bother you? would YOU continue to film under such circumstances?

give me one good reason why this film couldn't have been 'fly on the wall'?
I think even the godfather would suck if it were filmed 'found footage'.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 2/4/2012, 6:25 AM
@spiderneil Of course it could have been filmed in the standard way. But the found footage shooting isn't just a style, it's part of the story and a major technical component to the film. It's part of the films directing. How it looks and how it's directed with the footage style separates it from the COVANENT and I AM NUMBER FOUR. It wouldn't be as appealing if it didn't have the real life feel of a dcumentary being shot. It would also showcase the modest budget and FX which are concealed in the grain of the footage. But yeah, it could have been shot normally. Point and shoot with a soundtrack. And I gaurantee it would have taken away from the film.

Why would the Godfather be shot as found footage?

@spiderneil: Nitpick much?

This is a really good, realistic take on superpowers. If you don't watch it, it's your loss.

The film is already a success here in the UK - I watched it in a packed cinema - sold out in fact - in midweek. If that continues, how stupid will you feel when everyone else you know who isn't a cbnerd has seen it but you missed out because "it's not Spider-Man"

Your call, but if you're registered on this site, you really need to go see it. This is definitely on the top shelf of "powers" movies.
