The Matrix Resurrections is exciting for a lot of reasons, though only time will tell whether this fourth instalment can return the iconic franchise to its former glory. It certainly looks promising, and it sounds a lot like we should be keeping our eyes peeled for some huge Easter Eggs.
You'll remember that Venom: Let There Be Carnage was shot in San Francisco around the same time, with helicopters used by the Resurrections crew actually visible in the background of that Marvel Comics sequel. Was the favour returned in any way, though? Well, it seems Eddie Brock himself, Tom Hardy, may have found his way into the background of this latest Matrix movie!
According to The Matrix Resurrections star Jessica Henwick, the actor stopped by set and ended up shooting a little something. "We were filming in San Francisco at the same time as Venom 2, and I met Tom Hardy," she recalled in an interview with Den of Geek. "And so, Tom Hardy and I are running in the background of one of the scenes. And I’m so curious to see whether it made the cut."
"I can’t wait to get a digital copy of the film, because I’m actually in the background in a bunch of scenes as me, Jess," Henwick added, leaving us to wonder what sort of crazy visuals we'll see in the movie courtesy of director Lana Wachowski. "So if someone zooms in, they’ll be like, ‘Wait. Is that Bugs in the background, in the mob, running?'"
This wouldn't be Hardy's first high-profile cameo, as he also shot a scene for Star Wars: The Last Jedi in which he played a Stormtrooper who was once friends with Finn. Unfortunately, that ended up on the cutting room floor, but it's worth tracking down because it's a very funny exchange.
The Matrix Resurrections is set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.
