No Avatar Sequels Currently Planned

Despite reports to the contrary, Producer Jon Landau has claimed that there are no plans for Avatar 2 at this time...

The boys over at Nuke The Fridge posted the news from a special screening of the movie..

"Luis is currently attending a special screening of Avatar hosted by James Cameron. Luis just spoke to Avatar producer Jon Landau. Landau told Luis that despite media reports that Avatar 2 is currently in pre production, the sequel is NOT in pre production, and there are currently no plans for a sequel at this time."

Im sure its just a matter of time though. No movie makes as much cash as Avatar and doesn't spawn sequels. Then again, its possible after putting so many years into the first film that Cameron wants to put off another visit to Pandora for some time. Either way, lets hope he gets back behind the camera for something asap.

I don't know, superman returns put up decent figures and didn't get a sequel. Unless Avatar really has staying power and makes the big bucks I doubt we'll see another. I certainly wouldn't mind another trip to Pandora though, perhaps with the awe of the environment out of his system we'd see more story development from Cameron.

honestly, i'd prefer it if there were no sequels. saw this at the imax this weekend, and was absolutely blown away. BUT i feel like it has much more power as a stand alone film. just my opinion...

I agree, I really liked it but I don't think a sequel is needed. The story ends where it ends.

Yeah, I'm not sure where it'd go after that...I mean it ended with total victory over the humans so I'm not sure what the conflict would be. The humans come back? I'm sure I'd still watch it though.

Just a question, did any one else see the piranha 3d trailer before Avatar? When I saw it I was like, wtf!? they're advertising for a sci-fi channel original movie...and then I discovered that it wasn't a tv movie and that it was meant for a wide release.

I agree with Ror. They wrapped up the story pretty tightly.

It would be redundant if they had humans come back, especially after they got their asses pwned.

Maybe other aliens come to Pandora? I don't know.

I'm just not sure where they could take the story, like Guardian said.

I will say this though...

James Cameron is a pimp.

A sequel would be brilliant but what with the way it ended and the fact it was a pretty self contained story, I think its almost better to leave it as being a one-off, brilliant and unique movie!

Just got back from watching it, and I was litteraly blown away, so a sequel is off course welcomed dearly.

Tyler@ Somehow I think that if he do a sequel it will be better script-wise - Terminator 2 and Aliens 2 was very original, so I'm hoping that now he has estabilished the world of Avatar, so he can focus a little more on some great storytelling :D

NO WAY IN HELL SHOULD THEY MAKE A SEQUEL.

The first movie was [frick]en amazing. It was so popular because there was nothing like it.

The movie is so good as a stand alone that it would ruin it to have another.

What would the sequel be? World War 2 against the Na'vi

This movie is too unique for a sequel. I hope Cameron doesn't screw it up by making a franchise. Then again, he's never made more than one sequel for any movie. Everyone does the rest when they want to. Once it gets out of hands, then things get really weird, or just plain bad. I hope there aren't any sequels coming out.

I don't know how well a sequel would turn out.

Okay, just listen to what I'm saying for a sec. The biggest thing with Avatar was it's effects that no one had ever seen before, right?

Okay, so we have seen those effects, and have been blown away (for the most part) by them.

Now, what else was in Avatar that we haven't seen before? Nothing. We've seen the story, characters, etc. all before, many times. It was all the effects, there is no point in making a sequel if all they're going to do is bring back the effects which we have already seen in the first one. Take away the effects of Avatar and what are you left with? A generic, decent sci-fi flick.

So, unless the sequel brings something brand new to the story or characters, it won't turn out well. I don't know if I'm explaining my point very clearly, but I hope you get the general idea :)

dude the guy took 13 years to make it no this isnt just some random movie he made its a single peace of work. its like sandlot if you make sequals it will lose its uniqeness and make it less. to much of a good thing brings its value down

I think Cameron is saying other wise . Sounds like he has 2 more movies already planned out and just waiting to see if the money is there before starting.

He'll have to wait another 20 years to get enough money for the sequel after having spent 500 million on this one.

Shaman

thunderforce- I hope it does and i also hope it affects plenty of CGI'ed action scenes for CBMs. Not just emotions. The movements should appear more "real time" with this method as well. With this technology, i firmly believe that we won't be seeing anymore "Blade 2/Daredevil" CGI'ed scenes. I think it's a step in the right direction.

Does it look to anyone else like Zoe is about to bite Cameron's face off in that top pic?
