New PREDATOR Movie From PREY Director Dan Trachtenberg In The Works; Will Be Titled BADLANDS

It's been confirmed that Prey director Dan Trachtenberg is returning to the <><> franchise for a new standalone movie titled Badlands. What does that mean for Prey 2? Find everything we know after the jump...

Predator prequel Prey bypassed theaters for an exclusive release on Hulu. However, it vastly exceeded expectations on the platform and was a movie which generated both critical acclaim and serious awards attention.

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) confirms that director Dan Trachtenberg is returning to the franchise for Badlands, a new "standalone" entry which is expected to begin shooting later this year. The movie is said to be a priority for the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios and the filmmaker is already meeting with talent for the lead role.

As is so often the case, plot details are being kept under wraps and we don't know who the leads will be or in what period the story will be set. Presumably, it is going to be a theatrical release this time as Disney looks to increase profits.

Here's where things get particularly intriguing, though; according to the trade, "Sources say while it is still in early development, a Prey 2 is still in the works that would return to the films original setting and with the films star, Amber Midthunder, potentially returning."

"Sources stress no talent is attached to that film but the interesting element is that even though there has been seven films featuring the infamous alien, there has never been an instance where the star of a previous film has returned to reprise their role."

Are we on the cusp of getting a new Predator-verse? Fingers crossed.

In Prey, the epic Predator legacy continues with this action-thriller set in 1719 on the Great Plains with a band of Comanches. When Naru, a fierce and highly skilled young warrior, sets out to protect her people, the prey she stalks turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator - leading to a vicious and terrifying showdown.

When we spoke to Trachtenberg to mark the release of Prey, he said then that there are lots of places he'd be interested in taking the Predator franchise. Interestingly, he seemed to suggest those wouldn't necessarily be a traditional sequel.

"I think there’s definitely something…because so many movies are seen as franchise starters, there’s something inherently refreshing about a movie that feels complete. I hope this movie does feel complete," the filmmaker says in the video below. "That said, we do something very unique in that, whereas other movies may have a post-credits scene, we have some storytelling inside our end credits themselves."

"It leaves room for lots of different kinds of sequels to be made. I don’t know if we’re ready yet to say exactly what we want to do next, but I think there are lots of cool opportunities."

Stay tuned for more on Badlands as we have it.

It’s weird how they’ve never made a predator sequel with the same lead until now. I’d rather see it going to different timelines and see stuff like predator versus samurai predator versus Pirates predator versus knights heck, they could even do some war stuff and have predator show up and kill a bunch of Nazis and he could actually be the hero of the movie and take those Nazi skulls home and hang them on his wall 🤷‍♂️🤣👍

@AnthonyVonGeek - Exactly. I’d love to see a series of period piece Predator movies.

Even though the second Predator was overshadowed by its predecessor, having it take place in a modern city made it feel fresh and new alongside the original concept.

Be cool to see more predator movies set in different time periods

maybe a western movie

a pirate movie

Maybe a war movie where the predator is picking off people from both sides of a battle and eventually what remains of both sides need to work together. Maybe ww1

Who labeled prey woke? Or did you make that up to start trouble? If so, that's cool. Let's have some fun!

That have plenty of material for lots of Predator movies.

They can start with Harvey Weinstein, Bryan Singer, Hillary Clinton, Bill Cosby, Jeffrey Epstein, Roman Polansky, Woody Allen, and work their way downhill from there.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the time period of Predator: Badlands will be set in the future.

TBH I wished they focused more on Prey-esque sequels that take place across different past timelines as the rest here have said. Surely the idea must've crossed their mind. But why would they be ignoring it? It just sounds exciting and the obvious way to go to not seize the chance.

@NinnesMBC - I don't mind Badlands being another Predator vs Alien movie for example, and I think a premise like that works better in a futuristic setting

Off-topic: WBD has all the intentions to shelve Coyote vs ACME after all, they have refused all of the offers made by the streamers that were interested in acquiring the film. Zaslav didn't even watch the movie or a trailer etc, he just wanted the tax-write off.

Sources even say that it was all a PR move to calm the waters back then.

More info can be found in Deadline.

Obviously Zaslav truly has it against animation. Makes one wonder if he would do the same with anything DC animated related like Creature Commandos. And in case some have forgotten, Coyote vs ACME is something James Gunn wrote and produced. Yet it's being sent to the never be seen again.

@NinnesMBC - Batgirl was supposed to be terrible (which is saying something compared to the DCEU movies they actually thought were good enough to release), but Coyote Vs. Acme not only sounds like a brilliant idea but is reportedly really good. It has some great talent behind it (James Gunn) and has been praised by people who really know what they're talking about when it comes to animated movies (Lord and Miller).

And one last off-topic because Christian Bale really is Bruce Wayne when it comes to philanthropy.

I was kinda hoping the setting was gonna change with Prey 2. Piracy was at it's height too around 1716, so that would make sense. I like the samurai, knights, vikings, world war, cowboy and Hollywood ideas mentioned above too.

As for Badlands, "Standalone" can mean a lot of things so I do wonder if Badlands will feature a predator.

@IvanBadski - These Predators... They're not very good at what they do, are they?
