Did Ben Affleck Almost Direct STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS?

Ben Affleck made headlines recently for his interview on Bill Simmons' new HBO show where he appeared to be a little intoxicated and berated the NFL for deflategate. But was there something overlooked?

Was Ben Affleck intoxicated or did he just get extremely emotional about his New England Patriots and deflategate?  Who can really say?  While this portion of Affleck's interview on Any Given Wednesday was the subject of much debate, another interesting aspect of  his chat with  Bill Simmons was Affleck's reaction to being questioned about whether he was in line to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens before J.J. Abrams.  Affleck played coy,  stating, "Well I wouldn’t be able to say.  It wouldn’t be polite to talk about the jobs you turned down. But I did have a lot of offers."

He doesn't say it in so many words, but Affleck strongly implies he had the gig.  Imagine if Affleck had taken the job? How different would the DCEU look today? Jeffrey Dean Morgan portrayed Thomas Wayne in Dawn of Justice but was initially  a very strong contender for the roleof Bruce Wayne before Affleck was cast (as was Thanos actor Josh Brolin).  Of course, it's all water under the bridge now but Affleck's revelation makes for fun a fun bar topic discussion, at the very least.

The timing is also somewhat interesting - in January 2013, Abrams was confirmed as director of Episode VII and in August, it was revealed that Affleck would be playing Bruce Wayne in Dawn of Justice.  Check out this interview back in November 2012, where Affleck was innocently asked about directing Episode VII and judge his reaction for yourself.

Ben is a great director and if he joined, would be the best director a Star Wars movie ever had. But I don't think his tone and style matches Star Wars'. Still would be interesting to see him do one although I'm more interested in seeing him do more Oscar-like movies like Argo, The Town etc.

@PesciGotPepsi - Affleck is a great director but he doesn't hold a candle to George Lucas in his prime. Lucas may be a joke to people now but at his best he was one of the 10 greatest directors in the history of American cinema.

Part of me is happy he didn't direct it because I feel JJ Abrams was the perfect pick to direct....

But part of me still wouldn't mind if he did and Josh Brolin became the new Batman because I loved that casting (don't really care if he's Thanos o not, all you need is a good voice for that).

But then Affleck wouldn't be able to direct a Batman film which is the only thing to look forward to in the DCEU as of now.

Also [frick] the Pats. Nothing but cheaters.

Deflatgate, Spygate, and the tuck rule. Put an asterisk next to Brady and Belichick's legacy.
