George Lucas Finally Announces Star Wars On Blu-Ray!

If, like me, you're a Star Wars fan and having all six of George Lucas' saga's live-action films on VHS and DVD isn't enough, get ready: The movies are coming out on Blu-Ray. At the Star Wars Celebration V earlier today, George Lucas finally announced the news that many of us have been waiting for and here are all the details that have so far been released!

"I wish I could say it's coming out this year, but it's coming out next year," he told the crowd at the event before going on to talk about the new special features fans can expect. "They'll be different kinds of additional material. I think you've seen enough behind the scenes material for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be included in there, including more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet."

IGN also reported that after this announcement by Lucas, that confirmed all six movies will be released in the format sometime in Fall 2011. Apparently, the press release they were given also said that the set will feature, "...documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives."

And as for why it's taken so long to release the movies on blu-ray, Lucas said: "We've been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it. You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally. It's a very, very expensive process to do it."

George got to stop f-- with his creation. I can care less about the added footage. If his editing skills cans somehow remove the travesty of the prequels then I would see reason to cheer.

I've loved Star Wars ever since they released the special editions on VHS in the 90's when I was a kid. Hell, I doubt that any movie will ever beat The Empire Strikes Back as being my all time favourite! Will I buy this set on blu-ray though? Probably not. I love the format but there's only so much it can do to films that are 20/30 years old and I have no desire to see any of the awful prequels again, lol! :P I guess I'd probably pick them up in a year or two after they're released when they come down in price though.

Didn't he say that 7,8,& 9 would be made by different directors because after the last ones *cough* prequels were that good.

To all of you who are hoping for the originals, don't get your hopes up. George Lucas has said many times since the release of the special editions that he will never re-release the originals because they were "incomplete" films. He didn't have the technology to make them how he wanted in the seventies and eighties, so when technology finally caught, he was able to complete them in accordance with his original vision. He says he doesn't care if the fans fell in love with the originals because they're his movies and he can do what he wants. So unless you still have your old school VHS copies and a working VCR, you'll never see the originals again.

Wow Ozy, you've seen Clerks 2 right? I'm a big fan of LotR, but Star Wars is Star Wars, and while people continually compare the two with each other, you just can't. One is Science Fiction and the other is Fantasy. Why can't the trilogies just get along?!

One of the deleted scenes was shown at the Star Wars Celebration convention this morning, according to Newsarama:The original entrance for Luke in Return Of The Jedi, including building his lightsaber...Did anyone check out the article in the LA Times about Gary Kurtz, the producer of both Star Wars and Empire? He rips Lucas a new one and then some, and he claims that the original story for Jedi ended with Han dead,Leia a queen, and Luke a futuristic Man With No Name...An eye-opener for sure...

JoshWilding - 8/14/2010, 3:21 PM
I think the price will end up determining whether or not I buy them when they're released...if they've actually remastered the movies' picture and sound for blu-ray then I'm all for it but if it's just a lazy transfer that really doesnt look that much better, I wont.

OZY: WHAT!?!

The LOTR trilogy was great but there's not a single moment that can compare with the iconic moments of Star Wars IMO!

The original cuts of the OT are available on DVD. Lucas caved to fan demand and released them about 2 years ago. Until I replace my DVD player I'll pass on Blue Ray anything.

There is only one return, and it is not of the king, it is of the Jedi. :P

@juggy4711- If that's true, then I stand corrected. Anybody want to by my special edition DVDs? :)

Okay, whoa whoa whoa. I'll only buy the shit if d-bag Lucas puts the ORIGINAL version on there. He released it on DVD, and i have those. I want the original stuff on Blu-Ray. We all know that Han shot first, and that Greedo didnt even get a shot off. We also all know that Han NEVER STEPPED ON JABBA'S TAIL!!!
