Captain Phasma was built up to be a major part of
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but ultimately fell below expectations with minimal screen time. However, Gwendoline Christie, the actress behind Phasma's helmet, has said that adding some character development was a high priority for her going forward.
Speaking to
IGN, Christie revealed how she approaches the character.
"I'm hugely lucky to be classically trained with a method approach. So I do all of my work about who, for me, that character is, so I can go into that situation and everything is justified in logic and fact, like it is for us as humans. Life governs the decision-making process that becomes who we are," Christie explained.
While trying to tap into who Phasma is, she has been ignoring - and not by choice - the tie-in novel about the character. "I haven't been allowed entry to it. I have been following [Phasma author] Delilah Dawson, who I'm following on Twitter just to say, 'Remember me? Do you think about me,'" she said.
She went on to praise The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, for collaborating with her on the enigmatic First Order officer.
"Rian and I did have long conversations about this character and who she was." Christie said.
"And I was utterly delighted in how willing he was to listen to my ideas and really thrilled to exchange them with him and hear his. He really is a master writer and director, and I think we've seen that in the films that he's made but I think that we truly will see that in the depths to which he goes in The Last Jedi."
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 15, 2017.
