Jon Favreau Would Have Said Yes To STAR WARS, Endorses J.J. Abrams

Jon Favreau tells MTV that he would've directed Star Wars: Episode VII but official discussions never took place. "I think they got the right guy," said Favreau on J.J. Abrams.

Talking to MTV at SxSW, Iron Man director Jon Favreau says he would've been down to helm Star Wars: Episode VII had he been formally approached. He also stated that he didn't chase after the gig either. The farthest his Star Wars courtship progressed were inquires about his availability. Back in 2012, Favreau, J.J. Abrams and Matthew Vaughn were the three frontrunners for the gig and as we all know, Abrams scored the coveted gig.

"I didn't go after it," Favreau told MTV, "but it's one of those things that, as people would say they weren't going to do it, and as there were questions coming my way as to my availability... I was really scared of the idea that nobody was gonna [do it], and so if they had come to me, I don't know how you say no to that thing." You can watch the full discussion in the interview below.

After Iron Man 2 and Cowboy and Aliens, I'm not sure Favreau would have been the right man for the job. But Favreau's brand of humor and action sensibilities would have made for an interesting pick nonetheless. And besides, we need Favreau free and available to reprise his role as Happy Hogan in Iron Man 4, right? Hell, maybe Favreau returns to direct Robert Downey Jr.'s swan song?

"After Iron Man 2 and Cowboy and Aliens..."

I think you are confusing directing with writing. Was he responsible for the material he had to work with there? No.

I think Favreau would've been smart enough to learn from rushing the second Iron Man film. Maybe he was scared to do it again.

[Frick]ing hell though, he barely moved forward with Magic Kingdom during the time Shane Black and Drew Pearce were writing IM3. Dumb excuse.

IM2 was still heaps better than IM3, which was beyond terrible!

He would have been fine. He's a solid director as long as he has the script.

Favs should have directed Iron Man 3. I really would have liked to see his take on the third Iron Man film and i think he would have given the audience something a bit more spectacular.

I would not have minded if he where to have signed on to direct Star Wars.

I've said this before on this site but ... Well I said it before. Iron Man 2's biggest crime was that it wasn't as good as Iron Man. When it was announced Iron Man was being made expectations were pretty low. People even questioned why it was even being made. The trailer turned some heads for sure but overall the expectations were either low or people didn't know what to expect. As it turned out the disparity between expectations and the movie's quality was quite high. In short, people were wowed.

Movie goers were expecting to be equally wowed by Iron Man 2 as they were by the first film. But the first film had raised everyone's expectations considerably. There was no way Iron Man 2 could achieve the same wow factor. Period. That factor amplified any problems the film had on its own. But if you pull back and really look at it, Iron Man 2 was a decent flick. It wasn't without issue but it was still pretty good. I would also like to see a Director's cut someday. Cause I think that would resolve some of the issues it had.

Hopefully he can do Iron Man 4. Its bullshit that he took the fall for Iron Man 2(which really wasn't that bad) when the screenwriter was someone RDJ suggested. I can tell you right now Favreau would have given us a proper Mandarin. Black basically turned Ben Kingsley into Leo Getz from Lethal Weapon 2.

Ironman 1 was the best out of the trilogy, I really REALLY wish he was spear header of Ironman 3...

I like this guy.

He is a good reason Marvel has a multi-billion dollar franchise rocking.

I had my treatment ready to go.
My friends were willing to be PAs and caterers.
I cleared my schedule but no call came.

Jon Favreau and I both agree that JJ will prove a positive choice.

Next, I'm gonna wait on Feige to call about A3.
