Lawrence Kasdan's name might not be as instantly familiar as George Lucas', but make no mistake about it, his contributions to the Star Wars Universe were significant. For starters, he wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and was even enlisted by Lucasfilm to work on The Force Awakens decades later.
It's not exactly a surprise, then, that he was tasked with penning Solo: A Star Wars Story (alongside his son Jon), but with a change in directors and a multitude of issues behind the scenes, that movie had the odds stacked against it from very early on.
Reviews were ultimately tepid, while a $393 million global box office haul was considered a disappointment after the budget ballooned to as much as $300 million. Despite that, fans remain keen to see more of Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo, especially after the movie ended on a massive cliffhanger following the shocking return of Darth Maul.
During a recent interview with Inverse (via SFFGazette.com), Lawrence was asked if he would be open to continuing Han's solo on Disney+. "No, there’s not any talk of that," the writer confirmed. "I’ve never been particularly drawn to expanding [Solo] into a show."
"But, I do talk to Jon [Kasdan] and Ron [Howard] a lot about what went right and what went wrong with the Solo experience," he continued. "I would be more interested in doing another movie, not a TV series." We're guessing that means Kasdan won't be contributing to the Lando TV series that appears to have fallen by the wayside at Lucasfilm.
The ever-popular #MakeSolo2Happen social media campaign proves fans want Han's story to continue, though the most likely destination for a follow-up (if it happens) does appear to be streaming.
Kasdan's involvement would be a plus, but at the same time, Lucasfilm may want to start from scratch. Either way, with Ehrenreich recently signing up for a role in Marvel Studios' Ironheart, he won't have time to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away until he's finished with his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe commitments.
Do you think a Solo sequel could still happen or has the moment passed?
