STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Confirms She Doesn't Want To Play Rey Beyond EPISODE IX

Will Daisy Ridley really be done with the Star Wars franchise after Episode IX? With the newly announced Star Wars trilogy confirmed by Lucasfilm and Disney, the actress was asked about her future as Rey.

Earlier this month, Lucasfilm announced plans to expand the Star Wars universe with new trilogy created by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. While not much is known about this mysterious new trilogy, actress Daisy Ridley, better known around these parts of the galaxy as Rey, has made it clear she has no plans to be a part of it.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in a lengthy profile for The Last Jedi, Ridley - who became an overnight star with The Force Awakens - revealed she does not want to play the character beyond Episode IX.

"No," she told the publication, explaining, "For me, I didn't really know what I was signing on to. I hadn't read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, 'Awesome.' Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now."

When asked if she might come around to playing Rey again in the future, she reiterated, "No, no, no. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it's three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out."

While it was previously implied by the higher ups at Lucasfilm and Disney that the core cast of this current trilogy - Rey, Poe Dameron, and Rey - could stick around for future films, the only thing that's known for certain is that the future for Star Wars is uncertain and in flux.  Perhaps the trilogy that Rian Johnson is envisioning is something completely different with characters we haven't yet been introduced to.  There are plenty of stories to be told in this ever-expanding universe and with JJ Abrams, who is helming the currently untitled Episode IX, treating the movie as the end of the Skywalker saga, it's possible we get a fitting goodbye to Ridley's character.

Or it's possible Ridley returns as Rey 30 years from now, as her predecessors - Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher - did with The Force Awakens. To that, Ridley responded, "Who knows? I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years, so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of interconnected cells ... then sure. Maybe. But again, it's like, who knows. Because the thing I thought was so amazing, was people really wanted it. And it was done by people who really love it."

Without knowing anything about The Last Jedi and Episode IX, would you want to see Rey in the next Star Wars trilogy?

But Kennedy literally said they was going to make 10,11,12 with this same young cast?

This is the answer every talent gives when talking about the end of their contract. It's how you get more when re-negotiating a new contract. Her agent told her to give this answer.

@Forthas - After the success of the first Avengers film, Joss Whedon was asked if he'd return for the second. His answer was that he felt that one was enough to set the tone for future directors, and that he would feel he was telling someone else's story. Then a truckload of money backed up onto his driveway...

@gulducati - Thank you! This is what a lot of people around here don't understand. Every time Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, or Christian Bale say they are ready to "move on", it is an effort to leverage their bargaining position. For some reason people on this site take them seriously. Infamously Sigourney Weaver stated she did not want to do a sequel to Alien...she then went on to do three additional films. Daniel Craig likewise has stated he was ready to leave the James Bond films after the first...he is now on his fifth film and has been in the role longer than any other person.

@Forthas - "Daniel Craig is now on his fifth film and has been in the role longer than any other person."

Sean Connery was James Bond for 7 movies over 21 years (11 without interruption). Roger Moore, 7 as well over 12 years. And Brosnan is at 4 movies, like Craig :)

@Forthas - But that's not really true. I understand why you say that, and why this article says that, but it's the same thing than saying Mark Hamill has been Luke Skywalker for 40 years, which isn't true.

Craig has been Bond for 11 years straight, like Connery, and Moore for 12. BUT he's only done 4 movies, and the other 2 have done 7, and Connery shot his last 21 years after the first. In the past 11 years, being Bond was only part of what Craig did, you know what I mean?

If you take number of movies, Craig is tied at 3-4th. If you take total years, he's third. He'll be second soon, but only if you consider he's been playing Bond for 11 years straight like Connery and Moore did at the time, which isn't true. He's done other movies, and there will be 4 or 5 years at least between Spectre and Bond 25. Moore and Connery used to shoot one a year.

So I don't think it's that simple, but hey, I love the guy. He's a great Bond. I think Cavill could also have been. Maybe. Also Tom Hardy and Jamie Dornan. Fassbender and Andrew Lincoln maybe a bit old. I can't stand Elba. IDK. Sebastian Stan?

@Solarkalel85 - No, I understand why he says that, it's true that if you take the date Craig started at and consider he's not done, he's gonna break 12 years like Moore and Connery next year, but I mean, he's only done 4 movies, 5 in 2019, and it's not like all he's done is shoot Bond for 12 straight years, so I don't think you can say he's even second. No matter how you look at it, he's either third, or tied at third/fourth with Brosnan.

@gulducati - I don’t get why you’d want to leave a franchise. Stick around long enough and make that RDJ money and do other movies on the side

@Forthas -

With respect to your point being RELATIVELY valid, Downey, Evans & Craig were contractually obliged to many of their movies @ various points of 'negotiations' for example Downey's first 'walking point' was after '3' when he leveraged his appearance in ULTRON to get his costars a bit more $$ out of the back-end as NOBODY goes to these things to see the producers or directors! As for Craig, he has been in 4 is working on 5 & has not yet topped Connery so there's still that...
