Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker strongly hinted that Finn might be a Jedi in the making, but never really followed up on that. The Force Awakens saw him abandon his past as a Stormtrooper to join the Resistance and The Last Jedi...well, it pretty much just repeated that arc.
Actor John Boyega has never shied away from criticising his character's arc over the course of the sequel trilogy but has seemed to soften a little in recent interviews, leading to speculation he may be interested in reprising the role.
The most likely place for that to happen, of course, will be in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's upcoming New Jedi Order movie featuring Daisy Ridley's return as Rey.
It's previously been reported that Boyega may be mulling over a return and LRM Online (via SFFGazette.com) is now reporting that, "insiders close to the studio suggest that the return of Finn could play a vital role in bridging the narratives of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and the upcoming project featuring Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey Skywalker."
Apparently, both Lucasfilm and Ridley are pushing for the actor to return as Finn, presumably meaning he could be a full-blown Jedi Knight when we next see him!
Damon Lindelof's version of this Star Wars movie was going to take us 60 years beyond the events of The Rise of Skywalker, with an elderly Rey featured in the movie (Helen Mirren was supposedly being eyed to potentially take over the role).
Since then, Lucasfilm has changed course, with the idea now being to pick up just 15 years after the Skywalker Saga ended. The focus will still be on Rey's new Jedi Order - and the threat which rises to take aim at it - but what isn't clear is whether Ridley will be the movie's lead or just a supporting character.
We're intrigued either way, particularly if Finn is indeed being thrown into the mix. However, going by recent comments from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, this apparent sequel to the sequels is meant to set up a new era of storytelling, so it may be a one-and-done return for both Ridley and Boyega.
Stay tuned for more as we have it.
