STAR WARS Legend Mark Hamill Explains Why One Deleted Scene Was So Important To Luke Skywalker's Arc

Mark Hamill was recently a guest on Joe and Anthony Russo's Pizza Film School, and the actor explained why he wishes one deleted scene from A New Hope had made it into the final cut of the movie...

Along with Han Solo and Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker is one of the main heroes of the Star Wars Universe, and he goes from farmer to Rebel Alliance hero to Jedi Knight over the course of the original trilogy (the less said about what becomes of him in the sequels, the better).

Appearing on Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo's Pizza Film School to discuss The Empire Strikes Back, Mark Hamill reflected on a cut scene from A New Hope which sees the young Luke run into his old friend Biggs Darklighter, who has recently graduated from the Imperial Academy.

Hamill regrets that the scene was cut because he believes it shows Luke's naivety and that he's apolitical.

"The only reason that is interesting to me is that Luke has no political persuasion. He thinks it’s great he is in the Empire! Luke wants to be in the Empire if it will get him off the farm! So he is completely pure in that he is not politically motivated in any way, shape, or form."

During their exchange, Biggs would tell Luke that he wasn't planning to remain in the Empire, hence why he later shows up fighting for the Rebels. Hamill's take on their meeting is definitely interesting, and shows just how different things could have gone for him had he not met Ben Kenobi.

What do you guys think?

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Lucas was just itching to talk about trade agreements and nationalizing commerce.

Cue a Star Wars 'What If?' series that explores this and similar scenarios - comic, animation, not fussed. What if Luke had remained naive and had joined the Empire, took out the rebel pilot (Biggs?) who almost destroyed the Death Star, drawing the attention of soon to be mentor Darth Vader who, when sensing his high levels of intuitive force sensibility, positions him to remove Palpatine from his Throne. MAKE IT HAPPEN NOW!

Should have hijacked the whole quote. It's much better than the summary here.

It would have been cool to see. With all the special editions they rolled out, I'm surprised this didn't make it in one.

I was about to ask what was up with the new background but then I remembered America has a holiday coming up.

It does look nice.

I wish I could delete some scenes from Luke’s ending arc and add a lot more better scenes.

Oh how awkward would it have been for Vader to hear about this new extraordinary pilot they’ve recruited named Luke Skywalker.

“I’m sorry, you said his name was what now?”

@AllTheSith - ROTFL i didn't even realize this... he is supposed to be hidden away from the Empire and Darth Vader by Kenobi yet he goes by Skywalker... same as Anakin. You would think he would have had Lars for a last name and never told his real name.

Off-topic: I don't know if anyone's posted about this yet, but Lord and Miller are rebooting the old cartoon series that got them off the ground.
