It was recently revealed that Free Guy and Stranger Things director Shawn Levy is set to tackle a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm...once he's finished working on Deadpool 3 for Marvel Studios, of course.
As is so often the case, we know little to nothing about the project, but the filmmaker has now shed some light on what fans can expect from his take on this Galaxy Far, Far Away.
Talking to SyFy Wire (via SFFGazette.com), Levy said: "We’re in pretty early development still, but my goal is to make a Star Wars movie that is like a lot of my movies, which is visual spectacle and a healthy dose of wish fulfillment, levity, and big heart."
"If you had told me when I was making Big Fat Liar that I would eventually be making Deadpool and Star Wars, I would’ve said, 'Are you kidding me?! That’s a fantasy, not a goal,'" the director adds. "So the fact that I’m getting to paint on these big, rich canvasses, it’s thrilling to me. I don’t ever for a day take it for granted or feel complacent about it."
Cameras will begin rolling on the Deadpool threequel next May, and the movie is set to be released in November 2024. As a result, we're unlikely to see Levy's Star Wars movie until late 2025 at the very earliest and even that's a tad optimistic. Plus, given Lucasfilm's recent track record, there's no way of knowing whether it will ever become a reality!
Upcoming Star Wars movies are all expected to be set post-The Rise of Skywalker, making Levy's plans all the more intriguing.
Recently, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins confirmed that she's still attached to Rogue Squadron, so if the studio can finally get its act together under Kathleen Kennedy's watch, we can once again look forward to a lot of big screen Star Wars content in the years ahead.
