The Star Wars: The Last Jedi novel has been a long time coming and it's since been confirmed that author Jason Fry worked with Rian Johnson to include scenes from alternate versions of his screenplay for the movie. Every piece of material which is now released by Lucasfilm is considered to canon but the same can't be said for the Expanded Universe, something which has upset a lot of Star Wars fans.
However, there may now be some good news for those of you who miss those stories as the first line of the novel seemingly reveals that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker may have married someone after the events of Return of the Jedi. "Luke Skywalker stood in the cooling sand of Tatooine," it reads, "his wife by his side." The question is, could this be simple misdirection or a dream sequence of some sort?
Probably but if not, this may be a reference to Mara Jade. She was introduced in Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire and later married Luke and had a child with him. It's possible the big screen version of the character was killed by Ben Solo and the Knights of Ren and this could lead to her being introduced in a future spinoff. Alternatively, Luke may just be thinking about the life he wishes he could have had.
