STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Is The Lowest Rated Live-Action STAR WARS Movie On Rotten Tomatoes

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's theatrical run is already winding down, and while the Skywalker Saga has passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, it's performed nowhere near as well as the previous instalments in the sequel trilogy. Much of that can be blamed on the mixed reviews, and there's now more bad news for Lucasfilm!

With the final wave of verdicts in (there may be a handful more when The Rise of Skywalker hits Blu-ray, but that seems unlikely as over 470 critics have weighed in thus far), it now has a score of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. That means its the lowest rated Star Wars movie ever behind The Phantom Menace's 53%.

The only one that's rated lower than that is 2008's The Clone Wars animated feature with 18%, but the finale to this saga getting a lower score than the widely hated first prequel movie is definitely a shocker.

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Tomatometer: 93%

Audience Score: 96%

Critics Consensus: A legendarily expansive and ambitious start to the sci-fi saga, George Lucas opened our eyes to the possibilities of blockbuster filmmaking and things have never been the same.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Tomatometer: 94%

Audience Score: 97%

Critics Consensus: Dark, sinister, but ultimately even more involving than A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back defies viewer expectations and takes the series to heightened emotional levels.

Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi (1983)

Tomatometer: 82%

Audience Score: 94%

Critics Consensus: Though failing to reach the cinematic heights of its predecessors, Return of the Jedi remains an entertaining sci-fi adventure and a fitting end to the classic trilogy.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Arthur3

Tomatometer: 53%

Audience Score: 59%

Critics Consensus: Burdened by exposition and populated with stock characters, The Phantom Menace gets the Star Wars prequels off to a bumpy -- albeit visually dazzling -- start.

Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones (2002)

Tomatometer: 65%

Audience Score: 56%

Critics Consensus: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones benefits from an increased emphasis on thrilling action, although they're once again undercut by ponderous plot points and underdeveloped characters.

Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith (2005)

Tomatometer: 80%

Audience Score: 66%

Critics Consensus: With Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas brings his second Star Wars trilogy to a suitably thrilling and often poignant -- if still a bit uneven -- conclusion.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

344

Tomatometer: 18%

Audience Score: 39%

Critics Consensus: Mechanical animation and a less-than stellar script make The Clone Wars a pale shadow of George Lucas' once great franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Tomatometer: 93%

Audience Score: 86%

Critics Consensus: Packed with action and populated by both familiar faces and fresh blood, The Force Awakens successfully recalls the series' former glory while injecting it with renewed energy.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Tomatometer: 83%

Audience Score: 86%

Critics Consensus: Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground -- and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

Tomatometer: 91%

Audience Score: 43%

Critics Consensus: Star Wars: The Last Jedi honors the saga's rich legacy while adding some surprising twists -- and delivering all the emotion-rich action fans could hope for.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Tomatometer: 70%

Audience Score: 63%

Critics Consensus: A flawed yet fun and fast-paced space adventure, Solo: A Star Wars Story should satisfy newcomers to the saga as well as longtime fans who check their expectations at the theater door.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)

Bliss

Tomatometer: 52%

Audience Score: 86%

Critics Consensus: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - Really this shows this trilogies failure isnt on JJ or Rian, its on Kathleen Kennedy

Didn't the Phantom Menace originally have a higher Rotten Tomato score, but was lowered when it was re-released in 2011, and critics were able to dump on it?

@DonDave - Yeah, it was in the low-to-mid 60s until they re-released it in 3D.

@DonDave - Critics can go into RT and edit their reviews & score whenever. So the score will always fluctuate.

I rewatched Ep. 1 -8 before 9, and the worst one to me is still 2 Attack of the Clones.

@DonDave -
It's still more interesting than anything made lately and if they had gotten someone other than the horrible Hayden Christensen it might have been good.

@Goldboink - no, Hayden wssnt the problem. Daniel Day Lewis himself couldnt have made that script look good on film.

Maybe it's because I don't know much about Star Wars, but when I saw TROS, I thought it was complete nonsense by the third act.

Turns out, actual fans thought that too.

Although it did enjoy it quite a lot, in terms of actual quality I think it's just a bit better than The Phantom Menace.

Better than Attack of the Clones though? No way, in my eyes that one has one of the most underrated stories of all saga movies.

@MalseMarcel - I will honestly never understand how people shit all over The Last Jedi yet say Attack of The Clones is good. I’ve loved every single Star Wars film, whilst AOTC is good visually/story wise, it’s a terribly made film with bad acting, awful dialogue. It’s really not underrated I’m actually surprised it’s not the worst rated.

TROS, whilst I enjoyed it is tied with AOTC for the worst Star Wars Movie imo

@Matfin93 - I guess it comes down to personal preference. Some people value the visuals/story more than acting/dialogue.

@Matfin93 - Oh I'm not surprised that AOTC has such a bad rating, since the bad things definitely outweigh the good things in that movie. AOTC and TROS are both enjoyable, but AOTC has a better story in my opinion.

And I agree with people shitting on TLJ whilst saying AOTC is good, I guess we're one of the few people who like and enjoy all of em (although might not agree on how well regarding each entry)

I saw the original in a theater in 77, and won't even bother to torrent this one. It's not that I'm a disgruntled fanboy, for me the story ended with ROTJ, and I'm glad there are people who enjoy these films.

As far as I'm concerned Star Wars is now in a worse place than the DCEU. Which isn't an easy feat, because BvS is one of my least favourite movies of all time. But they simply have more options to deal with failure.

Batfleck sucks? Reboot with Pattinson.

Luke Skywalker sucks? Guess Luke Skywalker sucks now.

LongMayHeReign - 1/20/2020, 7:03 AM
@Kyos - But I'm not sure Battinson is actually part of the DCEU tho. So the DCEU Batman still sucks.

I haven't seen it. I really don't care about star wars now (i wasn't the biggest fan either but for example, i enjoyed Rogue One A LOT). What really killed SW was TLJ. It's fine if you liked the movie but if the director trash on the target audience, treat you like an idiot and such, well...you can expect the audienxe to not care about this story that much anymore. That's what happened to Solo, and now this. It's sad but it is what it is. Rian Johnson ruined the whole franchise by taking the fun and the joy of it.
