UPDATE: Neil Blomkamp On STAR WARS; Could We See Him Helm A Future Installment?

Blomkamp was quizzed about all things galaxy far far away at a recent press event, and although apprehensive, the Elysium/District 9 director certainly sounds like he might be interested..someday! Read on for quotes.

At a press event for Neil Blomkamp's Elysium - which was also attended by Episode VII producer Simon Kinberg - the director was asked about the resurgence of Star Wars and the upcoming seventh installment from J.J. Abrams. Blomkamp echoed previous comments from Abrams, sounding a bit apprehensive about plunging into such a beloved universe. But as we know, Abrams eventually agreed to take a shot at it - could Blomkamp do the same?

"There's a few pieces of cinema history that I like so much I don't know whether I could be involved with them. There's iconic characters that I really like that I would love to get closer to and make a film about. When I start dipping my toes into it, I get this allergic reaction. Maybe one day I'll end up doing something like that."

Apparently Kinberg "smirked" at that last bit. An indication that Blomkamp may be taking meetings perhaps? Obvioulsy that's pure speculation, but one thing is for sure - if Elysium makes as big a splash as many feel it's sure to (after all, how great was District 9?) there are going to be many interested parties knocking at the director's door.

UPDATE: It seems Blomkamp was never directly asked about Star Wars at all. Yahoo - where I picked up the story and mistakenly assumed it originated there - merely misquoted the original story from /Film. That site actually just speculated that the director was hinting at Star Wars with his above quotes.

I was wondering when someone will post this. Slashfilm also pointed out that Kinberg is writing/producing Days Of Future Past as well. And if Fox are really branching out their franchise maybe Blomkamp could be referring to that. But it's obviously more likely that he's referring to Star Wars and to that I say: Boba Fett spin-off.

well he should direct star trek 3 since j.j abrams left to direct star wars 7.

district 9 was a very intriguing movie and I now he said he has no interested in blockbusters but Elysium looks bigger than district 9 and more hollywoodish.

I think he could make a very interesting and gritty star trek.

@LEVITIKUZ After his public statements of disinterest Disney's acquistion and his absolute hate for digital effects... I wouldn't bet a penny on that ever happening.

@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin Bueno Vista? Don't you mean The Weinstein Company? Disney ended their relationship with Miramax too.

I'm not betting on it happening. I think he's happy where he is. Weinstein financing, Sony distributed Django. Sure, he could end up doing it, but he's going to have to eat his words.

In case people don't remember the exact quote:

"I could so care less. No, sorry. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.”

Blomkamp for Halo. Abrams for Mass Effect.

Blomkamp has the gritty sci fi down. Abrams has the sleek sci fi. Plus lens flare.

I really hope not. There are a lot of "franchise" talents out there, while the likes of Blomkamp, Rian Johnson, et cetera, should forever stick with their original ideas, because...well, we need more people like them! Yeah, I won't refuse if he does end up getting the job - District 9 is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the man's simply brilliant, in general - but I'd take another of his original sci-fi outing over his take on Star Wars at any day.
