At a press event for Neil Blomkamp's Elysium - which was also attended by Episode VII producer Simon Kinberg - the director was asked about the resurgence of Star Wars and the upcoming seventh installment from J.J. Abrams. Blomkamp echoed previous comments from Abrams, sounding a bit apprehensive about plunging into such a beloved universe. But as we know, Abrams eventually agreed to take a shot at it - could Blomkamp do the same?
"There's a few pieces of cinema history that I like so much I don't know whether I could be involved with them. There's iconic characters that I really like that I would love to get closer to and make a film about. When I start dipping my toes into it, I get this allergic reaction. Maybe one day I'll end up doing something like that."
Apparently Kinberg "smirked" at that last bit. An indication that Blomkamp may be taking meetings perhaps? Obvioulsy that's pure speculation, but one thing is for sure - if
Elysium makes as big a splash as many feel it's sure to (after all, how great was
District 9?) there are going to be many interested parties knocking at the director's door.
UPDATE: It seems Blomkamp was never directly asked about
Star Wars at all. Yahoo - where I picked up the story and mistakenly assumed it originated there - merely misquoted the original story from
/Film. That site actually just speculated that the director was hinting at
Star Wars with his above quotes.
