When it was announced that J.J. Abrams would direct the first of the new start wars movies, I was not too happy. I was and am still not content with the choice of Abrams as director. Now to clarify, he is a great director. I consider almost every single movies he did as perfect. Smart use of lens flares, unique story telling, and takes a chance with his cast. With all that said, I believe that he is not the correct choice to helm Star Wars Sequel/Prequel/Reboot, or whatever it claims to be. My reason is clear, Not fair to have one person helm both Trek and Wars. I would never realistically want Joss Whedon, to turn around and direct a Batman movie. Give someone else a shot at the new franchise. He got Star Trek, it seems like Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams are two steps away from bringing back my favorite movies/tv shows as a kid to the masses. Now of course Michael Bay is a horrible director, with no sense of substance to his pile of crap. Abrams is the far far better director.
So Abrams directing Star Wars, I am not excited. And it began to be more evident most recently when I watched Star Trek Into Darkness. I did like Star Trek(2009) very much. But the sequel, in my opinion, took a nose dive into absurdity. I will not go into all that made the movie crap, but the main thing was how the used Star Trek: Wrath of Khan as inspiration. It was so stupid and payed no respect to the classic movie that featured a emotionally wretched scene with Kirk and Spock as he dies. So what happens in the recent sequel, they say, "Oh, lets just have Kirk die and Spock be the one uttering, KHANNNNNN!" WTF. And then through the supposed intelligence of the screenwriters of the movie, Kirk aided by future medicinal technology is brought back to life. And Khan is Khan, but he isn't.
THE POINT I AM GETTING TO.
Abrams clearly does not want to "pay homage" in the respectful and tactfull way. There have been more than a dozen Star Trek movies and five television shows. There are certain things that should not be tampered with. Now some might bring up the point of Man Of Steel and the ending that brought some controversy. I do not view MOS as having a controversial ending. Superman has not been brought the cinemas since the 1980's. I say that, and not include Superman Returns because that was not a Superman movie. It was a cheap attempt to make it a drama based movie, with no action. Man Of Steel could take chances as it did, because of its history unstable productions, unhappy results, and underwhelming response. Star Trek is, in a sense, bigger than Superman. Gotta do some research with the Trekkies first. And why he shouldn't direct Star Wars is because he already has Star Trek, and there is not a sense of passion going towards Star Wars. I wish I could be more optimistic, but it would be fake. And with recent talk about Abrams possibly letting go of Star Wars because of obligations to Star Trek, my worries may soon wash away.
But all in all, If in fact he does direct the movie. He will go all out, visually. There will be a certain degree of freshness and ability to branch the franchise out ever wider. So who knows, but for now I'll wait with utter and complete frustration.
