STAR WARS REBELS Season 3 Trailer Reveals The Return Of Grand Admiral Thrawn To Canon

One of the biggest casualties of Disney's decision to wipe away the Expanded Universe was iconic villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, but he's set to return in Star Wars Rebels and we know who's playing him...

He's baaaack! Star Wars fans were left with a lot of reasons to be angry after the Expanded Universe was scrapped for Disney to start from scratch (you can't blame them for not wanting to have to adhere to decades worth of novels, video games, and comics), but chief among them was the disappearance of Grand Admiral Thrawn, a villain created by Timothy Zahn in the novel Heir to the Empire.

He took over the Empire following the events of the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, but this version will be making his presence felt in the years covered by Star Wars Rebels. His return is no doubt going to add some weight to theories that he may Supreme Leader Snoke, but regardless of whether or not that's the case, his return is great news. It was also confirmed that Star Wars: Thrawn is being written by Timothy Zahn (which will reintroduce him to canon when it goes on sale in April).

Anyway, check out the Star Wars Rebels trailer below to see him in action for the first time. The character is being voiced by Lars Mikkelsen, the brother of Mads, who will be seen in Rogue One

I admit, I [frick]ing hated this show's [frick]ing guts during the entirety of season 1 and the majority of season 2, but after that S2 finale and this trailer my opinion on this show has COMPLETELY turned around. So pumped for this!

I would have preferred him in a movie like Rogue one, but it's better than nothing.

I can't believe they got Zhan back to write a new book for the character as well!

This is the most exciting new to come out of SW Celebration yet!

I knew we weren't going to see him in the AFTERMATH series because of Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, so I'm glad REBELS is using him.

YES! YES! YES! the best villain from the old extended universe stuff. The only one who comes close is Darth Bane.

@mcminnjb1990 -
And Darth Bane is also canon because of THE CLONE WARS. I hope they introduce Revan next.

@Darkknight2149 - yeah I'm with ya. That small glimpse of Bane was good but I want more. Revan would be good in the main series as a force ghost that whispers in the ear of Kylo or Snoke.

@Darkknight2149 -
Except it wasnt canon because of TCW, most people who think Darth Bane came from the EU are completely wrong.

Darth Bane was a creation by Lucas to explain the rule of two in TPM novelization.

@brahbrah -
The novelisations of the first six movies are considered LEGENDS, even though the films themselves are canon.

@brahbrah - Except Clone Wars IS canon, because one of the characters in Rogue One came from that show.

Now that was a great trailer that got me psyched for season 3. I am surprised no one has mentioned the Outrider that was in one scene does that mean we are also getting Dash Rendar in the show as well. Thrawn's entrance in the trailer was magnificent and I know there are so many Star Wars fans that have been clamoring for him to be in some form of the Star Wars universe beyond the books. Lastly we are getting more Hondo which gets me excited because I loved Hondo.

@pesmerga44 - I freaked out when I saw the Outrider, 'cause just last night I was thinking about Shadows Of The Empire and wondering if we would ever see Dash or Xizor show up in the NuCanon.

Come to think of it, have they ever clarified if SOTE is still canon or not? It was definitely much higher up the EU food chain with its "everything except a movie" marketing.

@GreedoSarducci - I am pretty sure Disney and Lucas Studios said all the EU books were non canon. Now probably any books released now under Disney are probably canon but anything before is non canon.

@pesmerga44 - I might be wrong on the whole book canon issue though so dont take my word for it.
