Steven Spielberg's Next Project Will Reportedly Be A UFO Movie Based On His Own Original Idea

There are only a handful of filmmakers working today who can generate such widespread interest and excitement with news of their next project, and Steven Spielberg is most definitely one of them

There's been speculation about the legendary director's next film ever since rumors did the rounds that he might be taking a long break (or possibly even retiring) after the release of The Fablemans, but according to Variety, Spielberg's latest is already in the early planning stages.

Details are few and far between, but the trade reports that he intends to return to the sci-fi genre for an untitled "UFO movie" that's based on his own original idea. The screenplay will be written by David Koepp, who has previously collaborated with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Variety's piece also mentions that one of Spielberg's peers, Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon, Goodfellas), is now planning to shoot two films back to back: the first is his adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book Life of Jesus, which may end up starring Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller, and the second is a Frank Sinatra biopic with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence eyed to play the leads.

For a while after the release of what arguably remains his most iconic film, Jaws, Spielberg was pretty much synonymous with the sci-fi genre, helming the likes of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and later A.I., Minority Report and War of the Worlds. His last sci-fi film was Ready Player One, which was (mostly) positively reviewed, but was seen as something of a disappointment when it comes to global box office takings (just over $600 million).

With this in mind, there's bound to be a lot of hype and speculation surrounding this mysterious movie, so be sure to keep an eye on SFFGazette.com for updates.

What do you make of this news? Excited about Spielberg's return to the sci-fi genre? Drop us a comment down below.

Hot take: ready player one was kinda crappy and nostalgia bait, like a high budget kung fury.

@Fogs - Not sure that's a hot take... I thought it was pants.

@Fogs - I absolutely loved Kung Fury at the time but haven’t watched it since it came out. It felt fresh and unique and funny back then.

But I don’t disagree with your assessment.

And yes, Ready Player One the movie did not adapt the book well and was just a WB easter egg feature.

@Fogs - I gotta agree. I've never even finished that film after 4 attempts of trying to watch it..

@Fogs - never read the book for ready player one... but i very much enjoy the movie and watch it all the time whenever its on... disappointed to hear it wasnt that faithful to the book

@Fogs - it was boring

@mountainman - That's the thing, theoretically it (and RP1) should be great, but I found the execution cringy af in both cases.

@Fogs - I believe Kung Fury was supposed to be cringey. His partner was Triceracop. Thor was literally flexing his pecs the whole scene he was in. Hackerman hacking time. The David Hasslehoff song. It was like an extended comedy skit.

@mountainman - Sure thing, it was comedy, but unfortunately I didn't think it landed in most cases. But that's on me.

@mountainman - I personally love Ready Player One, it's just a fun movie to watch. Gives me those 80s movie vibes with a high budget, and I like the nostalgia overload.

@Fogs -

I liked the Oasis storyline, but the real world stuff was executed poorly, I really didn't care about it or feel invested in any of it, and the movie really dips in quality because of it.

Cool , intrigued to get more details hopefully soon…

Koepp’s track record seems to be a mixed bag but given that he co-write some , don’t know how much he would be to blame for the ones that went wrong.

Also in regards to Scorsese , that dude loves Jesus & DiCaprio as much if not moreso then he hates cbms lol…

Leo as Frank Sinatra could be interesting!!.

Spielberg has a weird thing about aliens. Obviously E.T., War of the Worlds, And Close Encounters, but he added aliens into the ending to A.I. for no particular reason, and then made an Indiana Jones movie…. Where the twist was more aliens.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/18/2024, 8:26 AM
@Havenless - wasn’t it Lucas’s idea to include Aliens in Crystal Skull?.

He wanted to echo the 50’s sci fi B-movies and believed the franchise was more malleable then just doing what they had been in the previous 3 films as long as the artifact had an historical or archaeological background while Ford and Spielberg were more reluctant.

@Havenless - those weren’t aliens at the end of AI, bud.
Fogs
Fogs - 4/18/2024, 10:28 AM
@Havenless - Those were robots from the distant future, and that ending has Kubrick written all over it. To me, Spielberg added the "last day with your mom" thing in the end, but a better ending would be for the film to end with David ironically being as the last 'human' on earth and 'living' with the future dudes.

I find it hilarious we are at the point where original ideas are so rare that the fact it's original is newsworthy 🤣
Evansly
Evansly - 4/18/2024, 9:20 AM
@Origame - Original ideas are risky, studios want franchises now so they can keep shareholders happy.

We'll continue to see more creativity from independent films while studios rehash and remake everything
Fogs
Fogs - 4/18/2024, 10:29 AM
@Origame - Totally true. Hope we're getting into a new age of good, original stories. We need it.
Origame
Origame - 4/18/2024, 10:34 AM
@Fogs - honestly I wouldn't hold out hope. We have disney digging themselves into such a hole they give peltz the motivation to start taking direct charge, and right after they prevent that motion do they reveal they're just gonna keep doing the same old.

I'm confident Hollywood will go bankrupt before they admit they were wrong and genuinely change course.
Fogs
Fogs - 4/18/2024, 10:37 AM
@Origame - Yeah, man. 'Hope' is too much of a strong word. Maybe 'I wish' would be better in this case, because I also don't think it's happening.

SATW42 - 4/18/2024, 9:09 AM
I feel like I already know the beats of the movie and there isn't even a hint of a synopsis yet.

He can't help himself, even with War of the Worlds where the aliens are razing the entire planet, he had to take a break to have them curiously play with bike wheels in a basement.

The aliens will be curious and sympathetic and a kid will be central focus. He knows no other way anymore.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/18/2024, 9:19 AM
@SATW42 - the aliens in War of The Workds were definitely not sympathetic

Curious maybe but not that.

I do get yah but almost every director has certain themes or sensibilities they go back to in their work so it’s nothing new.

Okay Mark, since said “arguably most iconic,” I would offer ET, Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan as candidates and in terms of sheer popularity, I would lean towards ET.

@RolandD - And JAWS?
RolandD
RolandD - 4/18/2024, 5:28 PM
@LSHF - Ror already mentioned Jaws. I would put ET above it in sheer popularity. It held the global box office record until Jurassic Park around 12-13 years later.
LSHF
LSHF - 4/18/2024, 7:17 PM
@RolandD - Thanks (I missed reading that).

I saw all four of them when they were first at the theaters.

JAWS was the scariest, (I was about fourteen then), E.T. was okay (more of a family picture), Jurassic Park was the coolest looking, and Saving Private Ryan was my favorite.

But the last new Spielberg movie I saw was the Crystal Skull film.

RolandD - 4/18/2024, 7:33 PM
@LSHF - Real close. I was 13 when I saw it. I would say your ratings are just right.

UFO’s were far more interesting back when the government was denying their existence.
