Sam Worthington Almost Made The Cut As John Conner

Sam Worthington Almost Made The Cut As John Conner

McG originally wanted Christen Bale to play Marcus Wright who in the original screenplay had much more screen time then John Conner.

Bale and McG eventually worked out all the kinks in the script. When Bale told McG he wanted the title role of John Conner re writes had to be done. The two had to figure out how to incorporate John Conner into more scenes with out making it seem like Bale was in the scene just because he is Bale. The change had to make sense. From what the two are now saying that has been accomplished.
"A lot of the work was integrating (Connor) into scenes ... and having that feel integral and sensible, as opposed to grafted on just because there was a star in the part" says screenwriter John Brancato.

At first the character of Marcus Wright had more screentime then John Connor. Since the Bale switch, the two share the same amount of screen time now.

McG was also asked about the original alternate ending, he goes on to say: "We had a jet-black ending. Connor dies, we’re in a room with all the people we care about. You take Connor’s likeness, you put it on the living machine of Marcus. He sits up, now looking like Christian Bale, takes a gun, kills Kate, kills Kyle, kills Star, kills everybody, eyes flare red, [snaps] the end" states McG.

And finally will the topless Moon Bloodgood scene make it to the DVD/Blu Ray release? McG states maybe. Not to distract from the sci fi feel of the film the Moon Bloodgood scene was cut, McG goes on to say "it felt more like a gratuitous moment of a girl taking her top off in an action picture, and I didn’t want that to convolute the story or the characters."

I am glad that they didn't go with that ending because it would have been pointless. Why in the hell would McG think that was a good ending? Killing everyone off? How in the hell would Kyle go back in time if he is dead? This has me worried about the overall movie now.

Also, I understand that other characters needed to be added to the story but why is it that this new character of Marcus Wright was going to get more screen time than the main character John Conner?

In my opinion Terminator ended with James Cameron, but after T3 it needs a good movie... will this be it? I don't know

The thing about time travel movies is that they can do whatever the [frick] they feel like and it can still be rectified by the time travel plot device. Personally i think that ending sounded intriguing. It takes balls to wipe out your entire cast like that..balls which McG is obviously lacking since he caved and changed the end when the fanboys bitched and moaned. He should have stuck with his vision, good or bad. When you allow the public to dictate how your movie plays out your not a director, your a Coca Cola machine.

SirPrize - When I heard that this tool was making this movie I thought automatically it was going to suck. I like Bale and that is what got me interested.

Rorschach-LOL! Touche. I didn't really think of that though. The problem I have with that ending is yeah it sounded interesting to me at first but if they played on the time travel angle to go back in time to stop John Conner from dying yet again why kill him in the first place. I know that is what just about all of the movies have been about but if they were going to kill him just to undo it in a sequel then why do it at all? I was kind of hoping to see in this movie, and the movies to follow, was John Conner progressing as the leader and legend I first envisioned when I saw the first movie. Just my opinion.

No i actually agree, i think the new ending sounds better, i was just pointing out that i would have more respect for him if he stuck to his guns. Anyway i cant comment too much since i havnt seen it yet, but i guess we will find out soon enough!

Is it just me, or does Bale have the same persona in every movie he plays in? At the very least, he has the same voice and vocal inflections. To me, he doesn't really have all that much range as an actor. Don't get me wrong, he's good at what he does and I like the movies he's been in, but just doesn't show much differentiation in character portrayal.

American Psycho and the machinist are radically different than anything he's done.

@Rorschach01- I got what you were saying and I wasn't trying to bash you or anything like that and I am sorry if it came out that way. I agree I think that some directors should stick to their guns and not let executives make calls when they shouldn't. Same goes for fans too because you are never going to fully please us and directors should not be afraid to make little changes where necessary. In this case I am glad as well that the director changed his mind.

And I really don't see it as Bale requiring more screen time because if he was orginally cast as Marcus then he would have had more screen time to begin with. Yeah I know that they added more scenes with John Conner because of him and I am glad because John Conner should have equal if not more scenes than Marcus.

Bale is one of the best actors out there. He is very dynamic. So he went on a rant. Big deal. Everyone has been there. Can't wait to see this one.

@cable82- I agree that Bale is dynamic. I applaud that he can get so into a character. That rant did not make me think differently of him. Honestly, I know I have gone off on someone and completely felt embarassed by it. He is human and that should not take away from his acting chops.

Rorschach,
Here's where I disagree with you: while "Terminator: Salvation" may be HIS movie, the 'Terminator' series is just as much mine as it is his cause he didn't write the first 2 (oh, yeah forgot about that garbage 3rd one), he didn't come up with the plot, the concept-- ANY of it. AND, he's not rebooting it either. TECHNICALLY, you could argue that he's making a prequel to the events of the first movies since this movie is the past of Kyle Reese and his world. So that being said, it isn't fair to say that he's changing his movie because the fanboys said to, cause he, himself was nothing more than you or I in regards to the 'Terminator' franchise prior to this film. NOW, if it was James Cameron who wrote that ending it would be a whole different story cause it IS James Cameron's story. As far as I'm concerned, McG DOES have some obligation to stay true to the world that was created in the first TWO movies.

Betty,
It's so funny how you always find the way to incorporate the sexual innuendo.

By the way, don't know if you ever got my post but I said thanks for making me that pic and I'll use it when I get bored of this one.

Well, yeah i get what your saying, but like i said, the time travel device means nobody has to stay dead..and since this was the first movie of a purposed trilogy, i doubt it would have been the end of all of the characters. I didnt even think that ending sounded great, just shocking..and its a rare thing that a movie will shock these days.
MetalHead
MetalHead - 5/12/2009, 7:23 PM
I did get what you were saying.

I don't feel like getting into the time travel aspect again but if you've read any of the posts I've written lately you know that the time travel in "T3" has ruined the entire possiblity of ANY of these films. If you haven't read any of it and care to (I won't be offended if you don't) and you want me to copy/paste it onto here I will. Basically, "T3" did ruin the entire series due to some contradictions that would make John Connor's existence impossible. SO, I'd personally prefer that they STOP with any time travel other than that which we already know of unless it's to (literally, not just being funny here) wipe out the existence of "T3."

What happened to McG saying the topless scene was very emotional and added to the story and yada yada when fighting for the R rating? I am still looking forward to the movie, but with every article I read I understand just a little more why he is dubbed McDouche.

Damnit come on! Can we have John Connor be more bad ass. I mean all he does is have other people fight his battles. I thought this movie was going to be about John Connor rising up and kicking ass. No it's another [frick]ing Terminator. If it was Arnold I would have excepted it.

You can't be serious, can you? Complain about the plot or whatever all you want, but does ANYONE really disagree with Bale as the choice for John Connor? I personally love him for the role.

@ Orod510

If you have followed Christians Bales work than you would know "EMPIRE OF THE SUN" Practically MADE HIS CAREER...He was amazing in that movie. American Psycho and Machinist were roles that SHOWED his devotion to his career, to his job as an actor. He drop nearly 100 lbs for machinist, than he gained it back for batman, than he had to drop another 30lbs because he got to beefed up to BE BATMAN.

I think, people on this site talk alot of shit about him, when really they dont know SHIT about shit...they just like to bitch about every thing, I personally love christian bale, and hes one OF THE BEST ACTORS out there, hes our NEXT LEGEND and younger stars will soon be following his lead one day. Also, 3:10 to Yuma was good to...besides his Batman movies.

@ Metalhead

I like Bale. I like him as John Conner. I think people on CBM just like to bitch about everything, I bitch because stupid directors and writers screw up origins of my child hood heroes, but what an actor does on hsi own damn time is his own damn business. "I reada comment on here about "Oh, hey bale go buy somae balls and quit bitching"....well for a person to write that pretty much sets that their either jealous, their haters, and they just like to nag like their [frick]ing mothers do to them lol....

BALE IS PERFECT for the ROLES he chooses, I wish more actor acted like him...maybe we wouldnt have that many C-listed actors would we? Bale bitches because he surrounded by idiots. lol Btw, Sam Worthington career started with JAG in 2000. Bales been doing movies since, 1987....I think he has every right to have more screen time than some under-rated actor.

AIIWOLF, I FULLY AGREE, CHRISTIAN BALE IS FRICKIN BADASS! ONE OF THE BEST IN OUR TIME. SO WHAT IF HE BLEW UP ON SOME DUMBASS? IT DOESNT TAKE AWAY FROM HIS ACTING SKILLS, JUST SHOWS HE IS LIKE ALL US REGULAR PEOPLE! AND AMERICAN PSYCHO WAS THE SHIZZNIT! MY FAVORITE BALE FLICK!
