Scrapped TERMINATOR GENISYS Sequel Would Have Delved Into Cyborg John Connor's Origin Story

Terminator Genisys was a critical and commercial disappointment which is why the franchise is being rebooted but star Jason Clarke has now shed some light on the direction a follow-up would have taken...

Terminator Genisys was a weird movie. While it served as a reboot of sorts for the franchise, it also tied into the previous movies and made some controversial changes, including having John Connor return as a T-3000 Terminator. Seeing the hero become a cyborg was obviously a shock and not one fans appreciated, so it's easy to see why the franchise is now going to be rebooted by director Tim Miller.

As a result, a Terminator Genisys sequel is never going to happen but Jason Clarke has revealed in a new interview that the follow-up would have delved into how John ended up becoming the T-3000.

"What I remember was that second one was going to be about John’s journey after he was taken by Skynet…like going down to what he became; half machine, half man," the actor revealed. "That’s where the second one was going to start, and that’s about all I knew." So, we obviously would have spent some time in the future, a setting that Terminator Salvation also delved into with mixed success.

How Connor would have then factored into the story from there is hard to say but it would have definitely been interesting seeing where the Terminator Genisys franchise would have gone. What do you guys think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below.

This franchise should just die already. They peaked 20 years ago. No one cares anymore

They really should’ve stopped after Judgment Day.

After two failed reboot attempts you think they would have learned that some things are just best left alone.

@JosephCronos92 - Good points about Arnie & Emilia, but I still liked the movie as a whole. ;)

@Optimist18 - awesome hat you liked it man, the movie just didn't clik with me jaja, tho i gotta give it the action was fine.

@JosephCronos92 - I'm a fan in it for the long run, but even then there's no doubt the series is beginning to run on fumes. It's clear they've been struggling to recapture the magic starting with T3. However, the original is my fave, and Salvation + Genisys make a lot of loving nods to it, hence why I go easier on them than most.

I'm not all thrilled by another "rebooted sequel". I could be wrong, but I don't think Miller or Cameron will be enough to fix the overall perceived damage to the brand. Plus, I just want a definitive finale. It's clear diminishing returns is in effect, and fans like me keep getting cliffhangers. I wish I could just accept T2 as the real finale, but I like the concept too much to ignore what's being done with it.

@Optimist18 - huh, that's pretty fair and understandable actually, i gotta admit i did like Salvation a bit unlike T3 and T5. I also would love a conclusion to Terminator, to finally have a good continuation to the first 2 and give them a closure (reason wahy i'm a eager with Miller), but as you say concept's too good jaja. I would love a great original Terminator videogame with nowadays technology, that's something i've always wished and i think it could be a cool way to keep going with the legacy and concept, i still remember playing the ones for the SNES lol. I really hope they come up with a good videogame for Terminator, it'd be stunning with nowadays tech and gameplays.....

dont' give it to EA tho jajaja.

@JosephCronos92 - They've only scratched the surface or failed pretty hard with the games they've made. It'd be worth considering, certainly.

@Optimist18 - Agree. Potential man, there's a lot of potential for a great T-Game indeed, i'd also add Robocop as well into the possibility.

I just need a war movie where humans finally win the war against the machines, after much suffering and an unexpected death.

IF Kyle dies, returning to the past is not an option. They would have to go to death in a final battle.

[frick] all these pointless sequels. For me, this franchise ended with Judgement Day.

Genisys is quite possibly the worst sequel to any movie franchise ever. It basically takes the cornerstone of what makes the Terminator franchise what it is and just shits all over it without giving a flying f**k that it’s doing it.

I can see the production pitch now... “oh, I know! Let’s make John the Terminator this time around”... “but isn’t John the leader of the resistance? Ya know, the guy who saves the humans? The guy the story of this entire franchise hinges on?”... “yeah, but we’ll make him THE BAD GUY and make old Arnold Terminator THE GOOD GUY! Ya see, that’s the cool twist we’ll do this time”... “do we need to explain how that breaks the timeline of what’s come before it then?”... “na, let’s just do it because it’ll be f**king cool”....

@bcom - That's exactly why I hated that movie. It really did take a shit on everything James Cameron built. It was so disrespectful.

Genisys was almost as bad as The Last Jedi in its own way. They had an underhanded pitch and they just had to hit the ball, but tried to go full reboot instead. All people wanted to see was the future war and how Connor finally saved humanity. Salvation dipped its toes in that but didn’t handle it the right way. It sounds like Cameron’s next sequel is going to be more of the same. It’s reaching Highlander levels of continuity issues at this point.

I'll just go with that the Doctor took him to the factory where Sam Worthingtons character was made part machine too

Man I think they should scrap everything back to Judgement day and restart the timeline from there, use cgi Arnold or let Marvel Studios de-age Arnold through cgi. I would like a better follow up to the second movie... and since this is a time travel franchise let’s go back to the good old days.

I think Genysis would have been better if they didn't ruin the main twist in the Trailers. T2 is my favorite movie of all time and I will continue to watch every sequel that gets made. No matter how bad they are they will never take away the greatness that is T2, even if the movie is literally trying to take it away.
