This is from Variety:

Sony's joined Lionsgate in the bidding on the rights to the "Terminator" franchise.
The studio had no comment but a source close to the bidding confirmed that Sony submitted a bid Thursday, the final day for submitting offers.

Lionsgate stepped up last month as the first bidder for the rights to the "Terminator" franchise with a "stalking horse" or floor bid of $15 million and a 5% cut of future gross receipts.

Halcyon Group put the franchise up for sale in September-. The auction for the "Terminator" assets -- which include the rights to future "Terminator" pics, TV series, DVDs and merchandise -- will be held Monday at the offices of FTI Consulting in Los Angeles, followed by a bankruptcy court hearing two days later.

If Lionsgate doesn't win the auction, it will receive $750,000 as a breakup fee from the winning bidder.

Why does not Mr. King of the World buy it back? He has enough money to bail out Greece from their economic collapse, or buy Haiti.

I hate to see one of my all time favorite franchise being tossed around like this. I am prob. one of the few people who actually enjoyed 'Terminator Salvation'. I think a lot of people didn't get why another film was being made. It's more of a new trilogy of what we haven't seen yet. The future. I just hope there isn't a new cast & director for the 4th & 5th installement. McG did a good job with 'T.S.'. I read an article where he gives a story line of what he wants to do for the next film & it sounds bad ass. Christian Bale is John Connor. Nobody else can be him.

i liked salvation and another sequel would be cool to see how they start doing the time travel, and how the humans win the war.

I hope Lionsgate takes it, I was a little wary of them owning the franchise when that first came out, but then the idea of their film style being used for Terminator started growing on me. Sony could probably do it justice, but then we risk a reboot after every less than stellar review.

Does this even matter? After the utter crapfest that was "Terminator: Salvation," it's painfully obvious that without Arnold this franchise just sucks. And actually WITH Arnold it was getting fairly silly. I mean, "Rise of the Machines" was fun, but nowhere near the level of T2, or the pure genius of the original. Just let it die before it becomes an even bigger embarassment.

Gotta agree with @wards and @angry troll. This franchise was over since T2. let it die

Nope. Not crazy. Just tired of crappy movies that ignore points established in earlier entries in the series. And Christian Bale. (How the hell does this idiot keep getting work? It's like Keanu Reeves all over again.)

The points against making more movies are valid, but I really think that Lionsgate seems like a good fit for making a quality movie from the Terminator universe.

I say "universe" because "From the Ashes" would make an awesome movie, and it could be done without Connor and Reese. I think a solid future based movie could really breathe life into the story and give time to come up with a quality continuation to the Connor/Reese/time travel saga.

Well let’s hope this time that a proper company buys the Terminator franchise who will hire a good director who will come up with a proper plot where the Resistance are fighting T-800 armies, not just a couple of them!

If everyone treats Terminator Salvation like the Phantom Menace which was a movie which is boring on its own but as part of a trilogy it would make sense to the overall story. My idea for the rest of the trilogy is that for Terminator 5, (set in 2029) the movie begins with John Connor explaining that even though they destroyed the first t-800 factory, Skynet began to produce T-800s in secret without the Resistance knowing about it. A year earlier they began to appear, infiltrating the human settlements, wiping them out. But thanks to the shutdown body of Marcus Wright, the Resistance have been preparing for the eventual rise of the T-800s by coming up with ways to capture them and re-program them. The movie could open with the Resistance fighting an army of t-800s which have totally replaced all earlier robots. The rest of the movie could deal with the Resistance putting their final plan into action of capturing & reprogramming as many t-800s as possible so they can lead a serious final assault on Skynet Central. Then the last half hour could deal with Skynet losing its superiority over the world but it puts it final plan into action of sending evil Arnie and Robert Patrick back to 1984 and 1994 and John sends Kyle and the re-programmed Arnie back too.

The last movie could deal with Skynet hiding in one last safe location where it is getting ready to send an army of t-1000s/t-x’s back to a week after Judgement Day to kill an unprepared human race with an army of advanced robots that humanity would not be able to defeat right after Judgement Day. The Resistance attempt to stop it and succeed in finally destroying the original Skynet AI but unfortunately, ten t-1000s/t-x’s succeed in jumping back in time and John Connor & a group of soldiers and re-programmed Terminators jump back in time to stop them. John and his group are killed fighting to save the human race and the movie ends in 2040 with John Connor's children leading the human race to re-build the world
