Terminator Salvation Producers Will Fight On

"That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."

Things looked bleak for the producers of Terminator Salvation. Despite earning $371 million worldwide, producers Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek had problems repaying a $30 million loan from hedge fund Pacifcor and filed for bankruptcy.

Now, it appears Anderson and Kubicek will be allowed to fight on. Variety reports that a judge has given the two the time they need to develop Terminator 5 so that they can repay the loan.

The court agreed with Anderson and Kubicek's Halcyon Co. in estimating the value of the Terminator franchise at $70 million, well above the debt owed to Pacificor. Anderson has said in court filings that "he is informed" that Sony will put up the funds to pay back Pacificor.

Anderson went on to say:

"Victor and I are both huge Terminator fans, and we do see [Salvation] as a foundation for where we take the franchise in the future. Studios are enthusiastic. We have no regrets, all the trials and tribulations aside."

Kubicek added:

"Obviously, this is the last place we thought we would be in ... But you have to deal with what's in front of you. It's been eye-opening."

Terminator 5 is currently being developed.

But T5 will make LESS money so how will that help them repay the loan? How about a government bailout?

@superdog: TS made more than enough to pay back the loan and finance another movie, it's just a matter of cash flow. It takes time to physically rake in the cash and pay back all of the vendors, etc. It sounds like Pacificor was trying to jump on them for the money before they had time to collect so that they could own Terminator and lease it out or sell the rights outright.

I didn't like Salvation all that much. Bale's "Batman" voice drove me nuts through the whole thing. I just couldn't get past it.

This is great news!!! I think TS could of been better, but I enjoyed it overall. I actually cheered when "Arnie" showed up, along with nearly everyone in the theater I was in.

(Nice quote, Reese!)

These r the same producers that hired mcg? So they can't make good financial or directorial decisions?

I too would have preferred it without Bale's troubled angst but on balance it was a good movie and made T3 look totally disposable. There's enough commercial legs for this to go forward, artistic integrity is another matter. $371m is good box office in anyone's books, I'm with Brent this is all about an opportunistic attempt at stealing a franchise.

@Michael: I thought Bale's voice was okay (he probably talks like that to disguise his British accent).

And, yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they just wanted to get their hands on Terminator.

@Michael/Brent: Yep, I bet they wanted the franchise!

dont get me wrong. i liked salvation and would definitely see a sequel. but there had to have been something in thier loan package that should have stated that they had time to repay it. if they signed the deal knowing that the company could "jump on them and try to take the rights" then thats thier problem. they should have had a better contract. and being able to declare bankruptcy and still get money to make a multi million dollar movie is a joke. how can they declare bankruptcy if they have all that supposed money coming in. defeats the whole purpose of bankruptcy.

There are a couple of reasons Salvation didn't do as well as expected. Putting a PG13 rating on terminator is like Hallmark putting gangsta rap lyrics in their cards. The tv show doesn't help neither, it confuses non hardcore fans with the time line. Last is I don't think the movie was promoted that well for a PG13 movie. If they were going to water down the movie for mass appeal then they should have made more people aware of it. I refuse to believe that Bale's cursing at a helper on the set was the reason behind the movies decline at the box office. I do hope they come out swinging on the next movie.

SEE I HEARD THEY WERE GOING TO KILL JOHN CONNOR AND WHAT WORTHINGTONS CHARACTER WAS GOING TO DO WAS BECOME JOHN CONNOR SO THE RESISTANCE WOULD HAVE THEIR LEADER. ID LIKE SEEING A TERMINATOR POWERED JOHN CONNOR THAT WOULD BE COOL.

MICHAELSIX-- Nice, Gary Numan. Been looking for that on vinyl.

TS was ok at best. They need to get their head out of their ass and make a great story!

@gunsmith: I would hate to lose Bale, but the idea that the leader of the human resistance might actually be a Terminator is a great idea!

GUNSMITH-- I thought that was then original ending for Salvation? That would have been cool.

the original ending had bale dying and putting his skin on marcus. then marcus wakes up and kills everyone, kyle, the wife, moon bloodgood, everyone. that part was stupid, but i think making him marcus would have been great. they could have explored him trying to become john, dealing with his pregnant wife, and the irony of a terminator being the savior of the human race would have been great. but ofcourse mcg [frick]ed it up.

As a HUGE Terminator fan, I am very happy to hear there will be another film. T4 was not that bad IMO.

Hopefully, this will provide enough incentive to those producers to MAKE A GREAT MOVIE and return silver screen glory back to the franchise.

The important thing is that they don't RUSH the production/development of the movie, regardless of whatever time frame there is.

Smooth is fast, and fast is slow.
