Tron 3 Going Forward

Tron 3 Going Forward

Atlhough Disney won't, as Deadline points out, be backing up the brinks truck for the profits of Tron: Legacy, the site is reporting that a third film in the series IS going forward thanks to a near-$400 million gross not counting DVD/Blu-ray sales.

"Tron: Legacy's performance certainly gives the studio reason to think it has poured the foundation for a franchise," notes Deadline. "Disney has begun work on a sequel, which [director Joseph] Kosinski is constructing with original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Maybe because of Tron: Legacy's pricey launch and heightened expectations, I had the impression that the film had been a bit underwhelming, despite a $44 million opening weekend. But looks are deceiving.... Its performance certainly compares well to other 2D films that launched franchises. Tron: Legacy out-grossed the Chris Nolan-directed Batman Begins ($373 million) and the Abrams-directed Star Trek ($386 million), both of which were based on brands far more famous than the long-forgotten 1982 original Tron. For that matter, Tron: Legacy out-grossed The Bourne Identity ($214 million) and its sequel The Bourne Supremacy ($288 million). It also bested X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($373 million), National Treasure ($347 million) and The Fast and the Furious ($207 million). It out-grossed all the films in that franchise. Beyond that, the film fed other Disney divisions. The Tron: Legacy soundtrack sold 615,000 copies worldwide, and the movie spawned ElecTRONica, a featured attraction at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. A Tron: Legacy rollercoaster for the new Shanghai theme park is under discussion."

the only way i will see this is if tron comes back. that was the one thing i hate about legacy is that the title character was only in it for about 20 seconds.

They clearly set up a sequel with Tron and Dillinger Jr. I'll be looking forward to this.

What I'd love to see in a third "Tron" movie:

- Bring back Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn. I know the third is likely setting up a new trilogy with Sam and Quorra, plus we all know what we saw happen with Kevin Flynn in the finale, but I'd love to see him come back somehow. Besides, Jeff Bridges rules! Tell me I'm wrong.
- Actually have Tron in the movie for more than ten minutes. He was grossly underused in this.
- Get a good script with proper character development. This usually suffers with each sequel to a hit franchise and I don't want "Tron" to fall into that category.
- I'd love it if the third film featured more of the old "Tron" cast members. Get David Warner back in the cast as Edward Dillinger, and have his character meet up with his son (played by Cillian Murphy in "Tron: Legacy"). I'd also love to see Bruce Boxleitner have a bigger, supporting role as Alan Bradley/Tron, not just a mere cameo. And bring back Cindy Morgan as Lora/Yori, especially since it's been said Lora and Alan are married now in the "Tron" films.
- The third film should develop the Sam and Quorra relationship a lot more. They make a cute couple and in my opinion, they didn't get enough screen-time together in "Tron: Legacy".

Legacy definitley set Tron (character) up for more screentime in future sequels. although he was underused to the point that the title shoulda just been Legacy. and i would love to see Murphy back as jr. but dont make him a villain. make him the anti-hero. Boba Fett comes to mind. you may not like his motives but he always lands on the right side per se.

while there were a few holes in Legacy, i hope to see more films like it. especially with Daft Punk in the music department. a must!

How about the next Tron try not to be similar to Star Wars. (C'mon did no one else see similar references?)
In all seriousness, I liked Legacy, but found it boring at some parts. The soundtrack is awesomely epic!

I actually really liked this movie, and the original, i too would love to see more of Tron in the third one, and pretty much every one thats been mentioned. I also would like to see the guy that played Ram come back, i know the program was derezzed in the first one, but the user was still around if you watch flynn lives. This has some major potential as far as franchise goes so I'd love to see these people come back!

Boycotted Tron Legacy since it was a joke, was not based on the latest technology like the original.

This is what tron 2 should have been.

@luckylu I think that's probably why it was called Tron:LEGACY, it's all about the legacy of the Tron character, not about the character himself.
Third one should be great, hope we dont have to wait another 20 odd years for it though ;P

You know what I like about Disney? Faith in sequels. Movie sagas don't always have to be rebooted. Starting over is often (not always) boring and it means that Hollywood never has to apologize for a movie that sucks. As awful as Spiderman 3 and Fantastic Four were... I'd still rather see a sequel. Even as much as I love Zach Snyder, I'd rather see a sequel to Superman Returns than a reboot.

Cinderella 1 (1950)
Cinderella 2 (2002)

Tron 1 (1982)
Tron 2 (2010)

Of course this is only a couple of examples
