Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Misses Out On Top Spot At The UK Box Office!

The latest comedy offering from Adam Sandler beat it to the top of the UK box office but it did reach a much better position than it's release in the US! Read on for details...

Sony Pictures' Grown Ups starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock muscled it's way to the top of the charts with a reasonably impressive opening of £2M ($3.1M) from 401 screens at a print average of £5,005 ($7,673).

However, the critically acclaimed Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World from Universal had to end up settling for only second place which is still considerably better than in the US where it took only fifth place after release.

The movie grossed £1.6M ($2.5M) from 408 screens for an average of £3,933 ($6,000 ). That means it performed better per screen than in the US although it couldnt quite compete with director Edgar Wright's previous movie, Hot Fuzz, which took £5.9M when it opened in 2007.

The next comic book movie which is hoping to improve on its disappointing US opening weekend is Warner Bros’ Jonah Hex.

Scott defeated the 7 evil ex's but he couldn't beat The Waterboy, The Mall Cop, & The Zebra.

Such a shame...Scott Pilgrim was an excellent movie, so funny and visually stunning. I think it's safe to say though that this movie will become a cult classic. I think it's the audiences though, people are too scared of something new....so they'd rather go see that piece of crap the Expendables. BLEH!

Dammit. I would have loved to of seen Scott Pilgrim get to #1 in Wright's home country! (and mine!) It really was a superb movie and as I said in my REVIEW, it was one of the best CBM's ever! I just hope that this doesnt affect his chances of making that Ant-Man movie... :(

Nicely said by the way Ryden. I read that it cost $85 million to make so I hope it at least makes that back even though it's not looking too likely right now. At least Wright can console himself with the fact it got better reviews than any of the crap that's beaten it at the box office!

That's a shame, it was an incredible movie. But I think it was to be expected. For the most part, it's appeal was limited to a fairly small group, and I guess it just looked too weird for the average movie goer. The crowded release date probably didn't help either.

Still, it's something of a martyr film. Uncompromising worship and accuracy to the source material in favor of success.

Some movies just don't get the traction they deserve. I saw it last Saturday, not really expecting to love it as much as I did. It's very well done, with a great script, good direction, excellent performances and visuals, and a lot of heart ... hopefully it'll find an audience on DVD/cable etc.

It could be a big hit when it hits DVD. Hopefully.

I loved Scott Pilgrim. It was a movie made almost strictly for fans of the genre. In that move it lost tons of money, but it will be a cult classic no doubt!

I just saw Scott Pilgrim too. I wasn't expecting much, and came out feeling great! My heart jumped with the music and I was laughing pretty hard. Not many movies make me laugh. I also saw the Expendables, and it was the opposite. I had high hopes for it because I love Stateman and Li, but came out dissapointed. The special effects were cheesy, and seeing Stallone running after the plane was painful. All the steroids in the world can't make you run gracefully...

Also, Rourke didn't do s#it, and that let me down even more. Hopefully on the sequel he gets to do something...

Both the Expendables and Scott Pilgrim kicked ASS.

It’s sad that the masses are so programmed to fear something new. Pilgrim was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Anybody who has ever dated a lot of people can relate to the subtleties of this flick. Its brilliant! Most creative film in years!

@flames- He's been bashing on Scott Pilgrim for a while, for no real purpose other than he's a prude...if I remember correctly I think he said "it's for stoners" so he's just being a dick about it.

@Dmon- Please tell me you're joking, expandables was a piece of shit...that was just an 1 hour and a half-2 hours of just shit blowing up and a lack of plot. And if being a "real man" means you're dumb and are entertained by watching a desperate action star blow shit up...then sign me up for being a gay hipster then...I don't even see that as an insult, gay guys rule! :D

It's a shame to hear about this. At least this is better than the US's and there could still be a chance for the film to make-up in gross from tickets and eventual DVD sales.

ryden- same like people bashing first class, spiderman reboot without having a reason and without watching a trailer. so if you think is bad bashing this movie without a reason then why are people bashing the 2 i mention?

This sorta sucks! I thought that SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD was one the best movies I have ever seen. I mean for me it had so many aspects that I loved to see. The video game and comic style was totally awsome mixed in with a sort of smart comedic edge as well. Graphics were the shiznite also. You know that movie that you sorta wanna see but think that you want to wait to rent it on DVD. This is gonna be the one that you wish you had gone to the theater to see. Everyone planning on renting this should do themselves a favor and just down right buy it. It will save ya some money.
Ryden
Ryden - 9/1/2010, 12:14 AM
@flames- It's very different, because Scott Pilgrim has been released and most of us have seen it....and it's been recieveing positive reviews all around. Where as First Class is a movie that we know is going to suck, the reason is because we've been given out certain information that we know can only lead to disaster. As for the Spidey reboot, I don't think people should be hating on it....
xkot
xkot - 9/1/2010, 8:58 AM
marcolanni - Did you see it and just not enjoy it? Humor is subjective, but I enjoyed the first "coins" gag, the "have you seen a girl with hair like this," Scott ordering the package just to meet Ramona, Chris Evans' character, the name "Knives," Ellen Wong's perfect devotion to Scott, the vegan police sequence ... YMMV.

To me, the whole thing was fresh, clever, and the emotions very "real." Four days after seeing it, it's still with me. It's one of the few movies I've seen in a VERY long time that I want to see again soon. But as I said on another Pilgrim thread, it has "cult movie" written all over it, so it seems to me the kind of movie that, if you get it, you love it; if you don't get it ... you don't get it. And that's fine.

@marcolanni- But why judge a movie based on the actor alone? A good one as well. So what if he's played the same characterf over and over again, Mark Strong plays a villain in pretty much everything he's done yet he's still a good actor.
