With the world premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings just hours away, Marvel Studios has spent most of today hyping up the latest Phase 4 movie on social media. Fandango, meanwhile, caught up with director Destin Daniel Cretton to ask the filmmaker some big questions.
For starters, they wondered where Shang-Chi fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline, especially as Black Widow was actually more Phase 3 than Phase 4. "Shang-Chi is set in the present day in the MCU timeline," he confirmed, adding "Yeah, yeah" when they asked if that means it's post-snap. It would certainly make sense for Wenwu to want his son to compete in that rumoured fight tournament for the Ten Rings if he was among the blipped, eh?
Later, they attempted to gain some information on Abomination's surprising role in the proceedings, but Cretton chose his words carefully. "He's big and scary and looks really cool. I can't really say anything about Abomination [Laughs]. I think Abomination got a bit of an upgrade...or we might call it an evolution going through time. I do really love the design that we landed on for that character."
So, that explains the villain's new look, but should we stick around through the credits for a possible tease of what comes next for the MCU? The answer is exactly what you'd expect.
"Audiences should most definitely stick around," the director cryptically teased.
