SHAZAM! Actor Zachary Levi Explains Why He Is Glad To No Longer Be A Part Of The MCU

Prior to being cast as the titular DC superhero in Shazam!, actor Zachary Levi played Fandral in Marvel's Thor movies before being killed off in Ragnarok. Now, Levi reveals why he's glad that happened...

Zachary Levi landed the role of Fandral in the second Thor movie after replacing Josh Dallas who played the character briefly in the first installment. However, in the third chapter of the Thor trilogy, Fandral was rather unceremoniously killed off.

Levi has now revealed that he originally envisioned The God of Thunder's dashing friend as having a much larger role to play in the franchise, but was never given the opportunity to see it to fruition.

When I got cast as Fandral in 'Thor: The Dark World', though I wasn't able to do it, I knew that the Warriors Three could be really fun characters if they ever developed them. They just didn't. They didn't.

The Shazam! actor went on to explain why he was happy that his character in was killed off.

If Fandral didn't die, I might still be under contract with Marvel and I never would have been able to get this job. And I say f--- that! This is the coolest thing ever. I'm so happy.

Levi will now be playing a much larger role in the DCEU as Shazam!, which is set to release on April 5.

I really don’t see how it would have kept him from taking the Shazam job, but okay.

@Chewtoy - In the off chance that they didn't kill his character off then he would have been contracted to appear in whatever film Marvel picked for his character to appear next. And if that would have interfered with future DC appearances than he would have had to pass on the role entirely or risk being sued by Marvel Studios.

@smgmayhem - Being Sif didn’t keep Jamie Alexander from taking a television series job or force her to show up for Thor Ragnarok, so I seriously doubt playing Fandril would be any different.

@Chewtoy - She probably got the go ahead because they gave her a heads up that her character would not be utilized any further beyond Dark World.

She was up for WW after a meeting with Zack and Marvel didn’t allow it

@Chewtoy - I think Marvel have some sort of non-compete clause so you can't be in a DC movie AND a Marvel flick.

@nikgrid - And yet Djimon Hounsou.

@BritishMonkey - That is a very good point. Although...

It's 'illegal' for Marvel actors to appear in DC films. - Chris Hemsworth

And "There is possibly a non-compete sort of clause stipulating that while they are still fulfilling a contract to portray a Marvel hero for a set number of films, they may not portray a superhero character for a competing studio during the same contractual time period.

So to some extent, some actors under contract to play certain Marvel Studios superheroes might in some instances be contractually prohibited from taking certain movie roles for other studios, even though there’s not an actual overarching prohibition about making movies for other studios." - Mark Hughes Forbes

@Lothar @regularmovieguy -

Levi replaced actor Josh Dallas, who portrayed Fandral in Thor (2011).

Fandral was a nothing character (just like most of the Thor supporting cast for the first two films, hence Watiti getting rid of 90% of them) so I'm glad he's moved onto something he has more potential in.
