SHAZAM! Director David Sandberg On Whether The DC Film Will Reference The Captain Marvel Name
Up until recently, Billy Batson's heroic alter ego was referred to as Captain Marvel, & now the director of Shazam! comments on the possibility of seeing at least a reference to the hero's original title.
As many DC Comics fans know, Billy Batson's costumed alter ego was known as Captain Marvel for decades until the New 52 officially changed his name to Shazam. This was due in large part to Marvel trademarking the title back in the 60s, forcing DC to rebrand the comic series as Shazam.
However, even with that change and the reveal that The Wizard will be called Shazam, a few fans remain optimistic that the upcoming live-action film will at least reference the hero's original title. And based on a new interview with the Shazam! director, it sounds like this is a real possibility.
“Let’s just say we’re going to have a bit of fun with that in the movie,” David Sandberg told Entertainment Weekly when he was asked if the Captain Marvel moniker will be used or referenced in the film. “But he’s basically known as Shazam, which makes sense because of the confusion.”
It's unclear how the movie will have "fun" with the Captain Marvel name, but it's likely there will just be a quick Easter Egg or reference for fans who are familiar with the character.
