SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Crashes To Earth With A Disappointing $3.4 Million Haul From Thursday Screenings

While there's a lot of talk about superhero fatigue setting in, we'd argue that it's simply been a hit-and-miss couple of years for the genre. Marvel Studios hasn't been at its best, for example, but with Shazam! Fury of the Gods kicking off the DCEU's final year of existence, the hope is that this shared world can go out on a high.

Unfortunately, with a "Rotten" 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes, those already underwhelming opening weekend projections have taken another hit.

Beginning its run at the domestic box office yesterday afternoon, the Shazam! sequel was only able to conjure up a disappointing $3.4 million from Thursday screenings that kicked off at 3pm.

Back in 2019, the first movie earned $5.9 million from Thursday screenings that began at 5pm and had made $3.3 million prior to that from Fandango preview screenings. Shazam! would go on to earn $53.5 million during its opening weekend, but we're hearing that this follow-up with likely end up in the high 20s or, optimistically, the low 30s.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods' current Audience Score is 84%, so there's a slim chance it could exceed expectations.

This is a real shame to see, especially as its 2019 predecessor was a critical and commercial hit that set the stage for a promising new DCEU franchise. Unfortunately, the pandemic pushed back development on this sequel and multiple delays have only served to increase the gap between both instalments.

This debut is -40% versus last March's Morbius and -55% compared to Black Adam. Aside from those release date postponements, an apparent lack of interest in the dying days of the DCEU hasn't helped matters when moviegoers go into movies like this one expecting the stage to be set for the next chapter.

Unfortunately, this weekend might close the door on Shazam! 3 ever happening at DC Studios.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters.

Not that I expect the movie to do altogether too great anyway, it's a Thursday night, meaning people go out drinking and such. And it's the Thursday night before St. Patrick's Day. People were sure out and about in NYC, but they weren't at the movies I'll tell you that.

@MosquitoFarmer - Also the NCAA tournament just started yesterday. That is sure to have an impact on the opening weekend. Still a disappointing result so far though.

At this this makes Gunn’s decision easier. Had this been a critical/box office hit…might have been a harder discussion on deciding to keep rolling with Levi and Shazam in new DC.

Almost the reverse of what happened with WW. You could argue that if WW was bad and made no money WB could have pulled the plug immediately after JL and scrapped the rest. But WW success almost forced a sequel and moving forward.

@IronGenesis - you gotta assume knowing that these movies are the end of the line for the franchise affects the BO a fair bit. I know I'm not lining up to see them like I would've been. There's no excitement. Knowing a full reboot is just around the corner takes all the wind out of their sails, so the reboot is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It is well deserved for a studio that consistently attacks and disrespects it's fan base. I have no intention of supporting anything DC until the DC IP is sold to a competent company.

@bobevanz - I think it will be sooner than we think. Even if Warner Brothers is not sold off, at the minimum they would likely licence the IP to another film studio or risk losing more money.

I don't believe in super hero fatigue. Been a fan of superheros all my life and want much much more. This is really disappointing to see but I also have no interest in seeing this. I love DC and Shazam but this Shazam is a goofball and the villains are incredibly uninteresting and the addition of the family really digs into the saying of "if everyone is a super then no one is".

The expectations for superhero movies keep growing, and the product should reflect that. If you're gonna half ass it, or simply make something for your streaming library, we'll see it coming a mile away

We kind of all knew this was likely to bomb at the box office. The marketing was not great (unsurprisingly because the film wasn’t that great) and the poor reviews sort of sealed the deal.
