Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been playing in theaters for a week, but it hasn't been a good one for the DCEU movie. In fact, it's earned considerably less than Black Adam at this same point into its run.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been a huge box office flop and, as of right now, no one is entirely sure why. A poor marketing campaign won't have helped matters, of course, and neither will the fact this sequel was released nearly four years after its predecessor (which was only a modest box office hit in its own right).

This week, Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has been blamed for pulling the plug on past crossover plans, but The Rock can take solace in the fact that his movie was still a bigger hit than this one.

After a week of release in U.S. theaters, the Shazam! follow-up has earned a mere $36.6 million. That's an abysmal result, especially when it opened with $30.5 million.

For comparison's sake, this is a whopping -56% behind where Black Adam was at the same point in its release. However, not even Shazam! Fury of the Gods' lower budget will help it reach profitability.

This weekend, the movie is likely to earn less than $13 million and should conclude its domestic run with $75 million. While the Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes is 87%, that's clearly not indicative of actual word of mouth (if it was, the sequel would be performing considerably better, no matter what critics have said).

"Despite lacking so much of what made Shazam! great, there’s plenty of fun to be had with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a movie that serves as a reminder the DCEU wasn’t all bad," we said in our review"It’s just a shame it never quite manages to electrify us in the same way as its predecessor."

Can The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom escape the same fate as this movie? It's going to be a very interesting final year for the DCEU, that's for sure.

Will you be checking out Shazam! Fury of the Gods this weekend if you haven't already?

This passive aggressive rivalry between these two (in reality one) franchises is so weird.

Especially given they are supposed to be part of the same series.

@MrDandy - it wouldn’t be the case if literally anyone besides The Rock was Black Adam. He is an egotistical maniac.

@MrDandy - It would be like if Tom Hardy refused to have any relation to Spider-Man, and Tom Holland was like, "Well, what can I say?"

@MrDandy - And journalists like Josh Wilding keep adding more fuel to the flame by asking personal questions to these actors and then flooding social media with sensationalism to start problems.

Levi won't admit he made some comments that were unlikeable to many, whereas Gunn and Safran won't admit the impact firing Henry Cavill had on many fans' interest in these movies.

Being a DC fan has been a test of endurance over the past decade, and to have that blow up in the fans' faces at the end really probably just exhausted many beyond an immediate repair of interest. Maybe in 2.5 years when Superman: Legacy comes out people will jump back on board, but I expect Blue Beetle, The Flash and Aquaman 2 to all suffer similar fates.

@duncboy - fam no one was seeing this before that anyway, I promise you guys the outside world does not care about Snyder stuff

The only thing that hurt it was:

The first movie was moderately successful,

Shit marketing

And they waited 4 years to drop the sequel to a movie people barely saw the first time around

@ShimmyShimmyYA - How much do people care about Henry Cavill as Superman? Check the box office for Black Adam.

How much do people care about Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman?
Check the box office for Shazam 2.

People gave up the DCEU when they released the Joker. Just too many bad movies in that universe. The only ones that even made any sense were Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam 1 and Man of Steel. And all of those movies were fairly flawed.

If The Flash makes money it will be because of the Batman '89 nostalgia. It certainly won't be because of Ezra Miller. Will the GA even remember who he was?
That dude who cameod in that Suicide Squad movie that you either didn't watch or repressed. That dude who cameod in BvS that time in that really confusing moment that came outta nowhere. That dude who was in that Justice League movie that nobody but the die hatrd fans even went to the cinema for. Y'know, The Flash!
lol...Audiences do not know this character and if they do it's from television played by Grant Gustin.

Just sayin', mathematically-speaking, "-56% less" would imply it actually made 56% more. 😬

@PlusUltra - marvel/dc need to stop making sub-par garbage if they don't want their shit to flop - the bubble of every cbm being a must-see event has burst.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 3/24/2023, 2:00 PM
It will likely make less than $200 million worldwide by the time it ends its theatrical run. I don't think people realize just how bad this is for DC on film. If Flash and Aquaman fail to cross the $500 million mark, DC on film (outside of Batman) is as good as dead.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 3/24/2023, 2:02 PM
@Th3Batman - It’s Shazam. Shazam failing isn’t even smudge on DC’s reputation. They [frick]ed all that already with that Justice League fiasco back in ‘17.
tmp3
tmp3 - 3/24/2023, 2:06 PM
@Th3Batman - aquaman and beetle will bomb, but i still think flash ends up being a huge hit. that, spider-verse and guardians feel like the only cbms this year that have any potential
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 3/24/2023, 2:09 PM

Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 3/24/2023, 2:11 PM
@PlusUltra - This isn't an isolated issue, as every DCEU movie after Aquaman failed to cross even $400 million worldwide. That's 6 movies in a row that were financial bombs at he box office.

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/24/2023, 4:40 PM
@Th3Batman - The Flash can be considered a success if it makes over $500M, now Aquaman 2...the first one remains the only DCEU movie to break the $1B milestone, I'm not saying it has to make that, but the studio is more than likely expecting AT LEAST $700M.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 3/24/2023, 5:03 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Keep in mind that the flash has been delayed multiple times, which just adds to its already high budget. There's also the fact that they brought back Keaton, which is something you don't do if you're only expecting half a billion. They have to be expecting more than that.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/24/2023, 5:35 PM
@Th3Batman - There is no way The Flash's budget is below $300M.
Movie has been in development for over 7 years.
