SHAZAM! Star Zachary Levi On Why He Stood Up Against "Completely Fictitious" Attacks On CAPTAIN MARVEL

Zachary Levi proved himself a real-life hero last month when he stood up to online haters and their vicious attacks against Brie Larson & Captain Marvel. In a new interview, the Shazam! star explains why.

Last month, Shazam star Zachary Levi found himself in the middle of an odd online assault against Captain Marvel when a group of disgruntled people attempted to pit the two superhero movies against each other. It was part of an attempt to sink Captain Marvel at the box office by review-bombing the Brie Larson-led film with what Levi called "false inflammatory things" as well as complete fabrications. Levi ultimately posted a video asking people to stop trying to pit these two movies against each other and to stop with the lies about Captain Marvel and defamation towards Brie.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Levi clarified why he decided to stand up against the haters, despite any backlash he could face.

"I just think it's important to stand for what is right," Levi said. "I think it's important to stand for what is true. And I think that if we can speak truth in love, then we are doing our job in this world."

"I wasn't really privy to a lot of the stuff that was going on with that. I was just getting hit on Twitter by a lot of people, people saying that were clearly false inflammatory things about Brie, about Captain Marvel, and looping us as Shazam into that," he added. The DC-owned hero Shazam used to go by the name Captain Marvel as well, which is probably why fans sought to pit the two against each other and why Levi got caught up in the mix.

"I was like, 'No, no, no, no. I'm not going to be a part of lies or defamation, nor is this movie, nor should any of you. There's no reason why any of this needs to be going on,'" Levi said. "Then other people got upset because they were like, 'We were just leaving our honest comments no Rotten Tomatoes.' and like, 'I'm not talking about your Rotten Tomatoes comments. I'm talking about actual fabrications and defamation online.'

Levi added that he has "a lot of love for Brie," but said his response was less about defending her. "I don't think Brie needs me to defend Brie," he said. "But we all need to defend what is true. If we have an opportunity to do that, and I had an opportunity to do that, then I wanted to be able to do that."

For what it's worth, the attempts to ground Captain Marvel have failed fantastically. Captain Marvel is soaring at the box office, currently sitting at over $800 million worldwide, and there's a very good chance it could break the $1 billion mark.

Shazam, meanwhile, has received overwhelmingly positive initial reactions and is tracking for a $40 million opening weekend at the domestic box office.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Shazam opens in theaters on April 5, 2019.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I never discuss a movie until the date of its full release, and even then I tend to hold back. It's not about a potential ban, I know surprise spoilers can lessen another fan's moviegoing experience.

Because we CB fans have to stick together, look out for each other, and respect each other even when we disagree. Also flushing out the trolls while we're at it.

@MCUKnight11 - then why are we not against rotten tomatoes? Their solution to the troll problem silences all negative opinions on movies prior to release.

@Origame - because the fan vote can be easily manipulated. Are you fuking blind?! Professional reviewers, HUNDREDS reviewed the movie and it's certified fresh...meaning it's reviewed well, and is a good movie. I ALWAYS trust the average professional review than fan reviews, and it's always in the HUNDREDS to come to the final average...that knocks out the homers, and the haters. If a movie is 60 and above I go, if it's 45-60 and I love the actor or actress Im going. Under that, it's always a no go for me. How fuking hard is this system to understand?! Fricking dumb dumbs.

@Origame - and it also silences all positive comments... So stop cherry picking stuff to support your narrative. That feature was disabled because it was being abused by a troll campaign, plain and simple. if you are unable to understand WHY that feature was disabled, then I suggest you go do some research and open your mind.

@willyburz - just because of it being manipulated doesnt mean it should be removed. Especially since professional critics admitting to giving movies favorable reviews in exchange for early screenings. If you look at youtube critics (big name ones specifically) you'll see them painting a very different picture of the movie than what the critics are, calling it bland and predictable.

But even going beyond that, this is blatant censorship. Imagine if this were for a film everyone was unanimously agreeing looked terribly. They could easily do the same thing and call those negative votes trolls. What if this were batman v superman? Or suicide squad? We have the right to voice our opinions and rotten tomatoes was always placing itself as a safe platform to do so. Now you literally have no voice unless its positive.

@HeavyMetal4Life - if you go on the site and look up a movie not released yet, it'll give the amount of the audience that said they want to see it. When this happened with captain marvel, they still showed the number that wanted to see it. The change took away the ability to see the percentage, those that dont want to see it, and the total. I will give you the benefit of the doubt as i assume you just didnt realize it but its a fact. Heres a link to prove it, straight from rt. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_crossing_2019

Origame - 3/22/2019, 1:29 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - and to put this into percpective, when they did this for captain marvel at that point it only showed the 14,000 that want to see it. That sounds like a lot of people want to see it, if you dont consider the amount that dont. And if you look on the actual comments, one said that brie was inhuman. Wanna know why that obvious troll comment was still there? Because they said they wanted to see the movie. This has nothing to do with trolls.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/22/2019, 1:31 PM
@Origame - Jesus christ. Maybe that's because no one has clicked 'want to see' for that freaking obscure movie.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_crossing_2019/reviews/?type=user

And if you go to a film such as Dumbo which hasn't been released yet, it DOES show the number of people that want to see.

For the last time, stop cherry picking!! It took me less than 60 seconds to figure out the above: what's your excuse for not being able to do the same??
