SPAWN Movie Director Todd McFarlane Addresses Plans To Redesign The Hero For The Big Screen

Yesterday, Todd McFarlane revealed that The Walking Dead's Greg Nicotero will help bring Spawn to life on the big screen and the comic book creator/director has now weighed in on redesigning the hero...

Spawn has an iconic appearance, and while it's fair to say that fans of the character would like to see that brought to the big screen, it's equally as likely that the character's look will undergo some changes (and possibly end up being radically altered).

However, with creator Todd McFarlane at the helm of the movie, the risk of that is massively reduced, and he's now addressed what changes the suit could end up going through.

Apparently, while we will recognise Spawn, he won't necessarily be wearing the suit we're all used to.

"Does Spawn have a dark mask and his body dark and then does he have a cape in the comic books? Yes, yes, yes. Will he have all of that in the movie? Yes, yes, yes," McFarlane reveals. "So it's not like I'm going to give him wings instead of a cape and I'm not going to give him no mask instead of a mask. There's no going to be any of that. It just won't be exactly what a hardcore fan is used to."

"But I'm hoping that people who just go and are familiar with Spawn will say, 'Yeah, it's in the box.' And people who know nothing about Spawn will go, 'Wow, that's cool.' And I have to design for film goers not for comic book fans because the film goers are going to be bigger than the pool of the comic book fans."

That all makes sense and definitely sounds like the best approach for this movie.

@BlindWedjat - Probably gonna look like a skull. Been seeing a lot of that from McFarlane.

All I'll say is it wasn't the FILM GOERS that made Spawn popular, it was the COMIC BOOK LOVERS! Maybe Mr. McFarland should remember that!

I hope McFarlane isn't like David Sandberg, pumping up the project hard in interviews before production even begins... and then you see them after, and they look broken.

I'm not saying Shazam is gonna be bad, but bloody hell man, Sandberg looked destroyed at SDCC. And not just the stressful kind. I made a comment about it elsewhere and everyone just piled onto me and said its because he has social anxiety. Not sure how they all know that (maybe he's said it on Twitter, I dunno), but anyway.

It’s like some people have learned nothing from the last ten years.

As long as he does a better job than Frank Miller did with The Spirit.

Very curious to see how this turns out but I can see now the more interviews leading up to it’s release the more times McFarlane is gonna take swipes at marvel thinking his film is superior to all theirs and hey maybe it will be in some respects but just get on with it

And that's where you are very wrong Todd, and that is why this will fail.

@DoctorDoomSayer - comic book fans are who’s going to be filling these seats. That statement was absolutely ridiculous that he made.

I've never understood the whole taking into account just general movie goers with films, etc.

If somebody has never read a comic or played a videogame of said character in particular, then why would they care about the look to begin with anyways, they're seeing it for the first time on screen.

And who wouldn't look at Spawn on the big screen as is & not think that Mask is not cool.

Appease the diehards with look & aesthetic & the dirty casuals can follow suit! ;) :P

Whilst the 1997 film may not be great Although it is guilty pleasure goodnesS) they nailed the look & aesthetic of the Spawn series in that film even if the story wasn't particularly enjoyed by folk. Take tips form that & modernise for today's audience but don't be TOO drastic with changes to the look.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - Spawn #1 sold over 2 million copies, it's one of the best selling comics of all time. I'm not sure what he's on about "people who don't know spawn" it's an r rated movie for 30+ year olds who grew up on this stuff. I don't know anyone 25-40 that doesn't have at least a passing familiarity with spawn.

I will say this. If the movie DOESN'T suck, Jason Blumhouse is a genius producer, because it's increasingly clear in every interview that McFarlane ain't the right guy.

despite low budget the movie have potential. every news i hear is a good news. as much as i would like to see big budget Spawn movie all about Simmons - this could be also good cinema experience too.

also, stop bitching about Jamie Foxx. he was signed to play Spawn like years ago. it was no surprise he's gonna play this character. beside, he will probably wear the mask 90% of the time, so you probably won't see his face that much. Al has disfigured face, so there is a chance you won't even recognise it's Jamie.

if it would be movie mostly about Simmons then i would have my doubts about Foxx too.
bu it's not, Spawn is a Boogeyman in this movie. Secondary character. CHILL OUT.

@jerryblake - Why the doubt about Foxx tho? I feel like he has more than proven himself over the years with his list of films.

@jerryblake - Marc Webb ruined that in my opinion... Foxx acted out the role fine, the role itself was just lame. I always had a Denzel fancast for Spawn (talk about things that would never happen)... but I don't have any concerns about Foxx being able to pull off Al Simmons.
lawndart
lawndart - 8/30/2018, 9:47 PM
@jerryblake - It's not a matter of Jamie Foxx's face, it's his particular acting that while good in some movies, might not work here. -Cough- Electro-cough

not to mention the movie is finally getting made. which is miracle. i'm gonna apologize Todd McFarlane now. Yes, i did not believe it's gonna get made. I was mistaken.
so many years of talking and talking, yet somehow you manage to get this project greenlight. you just did not give up. respect.

Steamin Willie Beaman is playing Spawn? Simmons is supposed to be a mercenary. Foxx is about as tough as wet toast.

They should have tried Omari Hardwick from Power. That dude looks the part.
Kman
Kman - 8/30/2018, 5:43 AM
@Rothwilder - Jarhead, Django Unchained, The Kingdom, Baby Driver - all roles playing a tough ass dude or a soldier/mercenary.

I don't get where you're coming from on this.
Rothwilder
Rothwilder - 8/30/2018, 6:06 AM
@Kman - Just coming from personal preference, each to their own. Far as I'm concerned, he might as well be another Wayans brother. He is not physically imposing enough to be Spawn. Al Simmons was a beast.
Kman
Kman - 8/30/2018, 6:20 AM
@Rothwilder - I think he's much better than you give him credit for and comparing him to a Wayans brother is a complete insult lol - but you like who you like I suppose

I have low expectations for this... Spawn was probably the comic series I collected the most but I don’t get hype when I hear the slow news of this movie
