I was big on Spawn in the 90's but not so much these days. However I would like to see what can be done with a Spawn film today.

Nope. He may have written the script ages ago, but the only thing stopping it from getting made is that no studio would agree to produce it (because McFarlane wants 100% creative control). Now, there's a studio producing it.

Perhaps you should actually READ what's being announced.

@Darkknight2149 - But he is "writing and directing" it. This is exactly why a Spawn 2 never kicked off. The first film was directed by Todd McFarlane and it was terrible.

We will see what in development means in his eyes because he has been announcing a Spawn film for years.

@SonOfAGif - yeah, uhh, Todd McFarlane didn't direct the first Spawn. A Japanese dude named Dippe (I can't remember his first name) made his directorial debut with Spawn.

Yes, he's writing and directing it. But you can't make a movie without funding, hence why a studio is needed. No studio would want to make it because he wants creative control. Now, after all these years, a studio finally agreed to produce it.

Also, McFarlane has never directed a film before. Just music videos.

the first movie came out TWENTY. YEARS. AGO......this site has regulars who were not even born when it came out... lol......but, as someone who grew up in the 90's, I will always have nostalgia for what Image Comics meantn; and you gotta admire McFarlane's tenacity..

This is great news. Hopefully more Image Comics will be next. I'd enjoy seeing Savage Dragon get its own movie series.

They should just remake the first one. It just needed better special effects which has now caught up to the comic book imagery.

An Image Cinematic Universe would be awesome. Seeing Spawn and Invincible on the big screen would be the shit.

Spawn at Blumhouse is a perfect fit. They will keep McFarland under control and keep him reeled in. That's what they did for the Sham hammer and his past two movies have been great. Jason Blum knows what he is doing. Bring it on.

"...keep him reeled in."

Not a chance. McFarlane wrote the script many, many years ago. The only reason this film is just now happening is because he has said that he will only do it if he has 100% creative control. Apparently, a studio finally agreed to these extreme terms (that studio being Blumhouse).
RancidBane
RancidBane - 7/21/2017, 6:29 PM
@Darkknight2149 - doubtful Jason Blum is not going to write a blank check to McFarlane. He is a good businessman. He will keep him in line or cut him loose.

Keep in mind that this is the same Jason Blum that gave Rob Zombie creative control over The Lords of Salem. I'm not saying he's not a good businessman, but McFarlane recently made it clear that this film isn't getting made unless he has final say on everything (which is why the Spawn film is just now happening; no studio would agree to that).

Bare in mind that the script was written by McFarlane many, many years ago.
