Will McFarlane Spawn a sequel?

Every comic and its mother is being made into a movie these days, so Spawn creator Todd McFarlane wonders if his gruesome antihero is ripe for a reboot...

In an interview with GamePro.com McFarlane said that since the success of "Iron Man" hes been recieving calls from folks interested in making a Spawn sequel. The CEO of McFarlane toys says,

''A movie studio CEO called me today, actually: "I just wanna say we're interested." But I think he was the last of the big studios to call me! [laughs] But I'm still of the mind that [a Spawn movie sequel] is a lower budget, cooler, creepier movie. When we get there, it'll get made. [This goes back to something I said a few years ago], which is that the movie studios will start burning through the A and A- characters. They did a fantastic job with Iron Man, who I don't think many fans would describe as an "A+" character, by getting him up to that level with the movie".

He continues.."The dealbreaker is, I direct it. I tell everybody that in advance. The answer is, the only way anyone will say 'yes' to that is if I keep the budget low. If I make it an $80 million budget [Spawn movie sequel], they won't let me direct it...nor would I want to direct it. There are too many guys who are smarter that can do it. But a $10 million dollar creepy movie? I can do that one....In the movie idea I have for Spawn, there is no super villain. It's a completely real drama that happens to have a spook in it. And it doesn't mean that the spook has an arch-enemy or a nemesis, or any of that. It just means that there's a sentinel stuck in the middle of The Godfather''.

Well i for one hope this happens because its a great comic. It was also a great HBO animated series. BUT it was also, and i feel im being kind here, a steaming pile of dogshit movie released in 1997.

So take a crack at it Toddster, it cant be any worse than the last movie!

True, true, it can't be worse! Like Frank Miller makes sure his work is brilliantly represented, i hope McFarlane does the same. However, i'm really unsure about this "no bad guy" concept he's going for. See, that's the only part i got tired of QUICK when i was watching the HBO animated series. The drama behind the dark alleyway, it got old fast!!!

Yes rorschach, that is one of the bad bad movies. Although I have to start wondering, first Frank Miller directs the Spirit, Nel Gaiman is supposed to be directing Death the high cost of living, now Todd McFarlane directing Spawn?

Is this going to be a trend? I sure hope I don't get to see Rob Liefeld directing (no no no I need the same face always and hide your feet and hands from the frame as much as possible).

Regarding the movie, I would watch it but I'd smuggle some booze in the movie, if things start getting sour, I'd just get drunk.

I think I brought up this as a possibility not too long ago. But I say why not. This is an era that loves comic movies. I think that spawn could sell. Just needs a bit of reinventing. *Maybe no costume. LMAO. No Im sorry thats just a little wolverine humor. But seriously. I would love to see a new spawn movie.

lol, yeah lets just have his chargrilled ass running around au natural.

i would like a new movie..but im not sure i like wer mcfarlane wants to go with this..even though its his creation! he wants to make a serious drama with only minimal supernatural elements? out of spawn??..well go ahead dude but its not going to be based on YOUR comic if you do

I liked the Spawn movie I really did. Me and my dad both liked it. But why no bad guys? That doesn't make sense...I guess it's gonna be one of those psychological thrillers where the "bad guy" is some inanimate thing, like guilt or wtvr...that's dumb for a Spawn movie...

I don't like the low budget idea, the piss poor CGI, even for '97, was what made me dislike the original so much.

The original is a classic what are you people saying.
John Leguizamo as the clown is one of the funniest things I have ever seen and if you read the comics the clown acts the same way.
The effects for hell and the devil were bad but look at the time and the amount of detail that was needed. The movie featured crazy stunts, the suit was amazing and the cape was killer.
Spawn is a classic CBM that was great for the time it came out. If another came out I would be sitting in that theatre in a heart beat.

Well im glad someone liked it! i thought leguizamo was beyond awful as the clown..he may have been just as disgusting in the comic but he was also menacing..the only thing johnboy menaced wer his underwear.

And bad effects wer the least of that movies problems. A movie can get by with bad effects if theres good performances, story and direction..spawn had none of these things and was a holy mess from start to finish..in my opinion!

also, i may be a little harsh on it because i loved the comic so much and was very dissapointed with the movie..but im sure i still wouldnt have liked it even if i had never heard of spawn

I didn't really like the first Spawn movie but I thought Michael Jay White was perfect for the part Al Simmons, and Spawn. I want another Spawn Movie made, and I believed Todd will make it a good one, and it well be a reboot movie. He has the rights to his creation so its his say to do the movie, and I want him to direct it. Its best if you have a comic book fan to direct a comic book movie because it will be done right. Like David S. Goyer a big comic book fan did a great job with all three Blade movies and did a great job writing the stories for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Frank Miller with The spirit, and Sin City.

This movie would be awesome if it is done correctly just find a director that loves the material do not let the writer/creator of the comic do the movie it will most likely lead to shit see the Spirit if you need confirmation on that
