MORBIUS: Sony Pictures' Re-Release This Weekend Resulted In The Movie Flopping All Over Again

Sony Pictures decided to increase the number of theaters Morbius was playing in this weekend in an effort to capitalise on all those memes, but it resulted in the movie flopping for a second time...

Well, it certainly wasn't Morbin' time at the North American box office this weekend.

Morbius was a critical and commercial flop when it was first released in theatres a couple of months ago, but Sony Pictures' attempt to capitalise on the fact that it's now become a viral sensation has badly backfired. The studio clearly confused ridicule with people actually wanting to watch the movie, something that's evident from these numbers.

Forbes reports that the Spider-Man spinoff grossed a lowly $85,000 on Friday for an estimated $280,000 weekend. That brings Morbius' box office total in the U.S. from $73.3 million to $73.6 million, hardly helping Sony break even on a movie it's believed they lost quite a bit of money on.

Sony revealed plans to re-release Morbius in over a thousand theaters earlier this week, with even Jared Leto getting in on the joke to try and raise awareness. Again, it seems like a miscalculation on Sony's part as people poking fun at the movie clearly isn't an indication they actually want to go and watch it again.

"Jared Leto’s transformation makes for compelling viewing, but the Living Vampire can’t elevate a disappointing story that serves as a powerful, dare we say terrifying, reminder that Spider-Man is better off (and safer) in the MCU with Marvel Studios," we said in our review of the movie back in March.

Morbius is already available on Digital platforms and hits Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD on June 14. Check out our interview with Leto about playing the Living Vampire in the player below:

@BillyBatson1000 - they did make Spider-Man animated movie and marvel suppose dr strange two is perfect for fans they like it along with captain marvel , black widow solo movie no one is perfect not saying morbious I liked morbious good twist on vampire aspect I’m no fan of character him self
BillyBatson1000 - 6/5/2022, 5:46 PM
@dragon316 - Yeah, great films even with a solid script/cast/budget are still lightning in a bottle. My reference wasn't a sequel number - but the amount of times they can re-release a financial failure. Ironic since 'Blade' was the first Marvel template of greatness.
Whaley87 - 6/6/2022, 7:08 AM
@dragon316 - FAIL!
Ha1frican - 6/5/2022, 8:12 AM

BillyBatson1000 - 6/5/2022, 8:20 AM

Batmandalorian - 6/5/2022, 8:24 AM
Still dont think it was that terrible of a movie. I think maybe the audience doesn't care for vampire flicks. Marvel better watch it with Blade. Then again marvel can poop in a bowl and i would pay to watch it

Sort of OT:

Top Gun might just drop 33% for a 90 mil weekend. Unbelievable.

TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 8:56 AM
@regularmovieguy - wow! I must say that’s impressive but I also think about everything, everywhere, all at once, while that movie obviously had much much lower actual numbers, it’s second weekend went UP .04%

But dang for a blockbuster to only go down 30…

@DoubleD - you seeing this buddy?
cyclopsprime - 6/5/2022, 9:36 AM
@regularmovieguy - jurassic world will be #1 next week
DoubleD - 6/5/2022, 9:55 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - “I’m as pretty as a princess, mommy!”

Saving time because I think you will win. I thought Top Gun was great. I gave it 5 Stars / 5 Stars :)
TheHumanSpider2 - 6/5/2022, 10:19 AM
@regularmovieguy - A 30% drop in 2022 is INSANE.
I guess those are US numbers, though.
regularmovieguy - 6/5/2022, 10:44 AM

Bold prediction.
TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 10:45 AM
@DoubleD - she gets a pig heart transplant and all o sudden she thinks she’s a pachyderm

😂😂😂good show old boy all in good fun! 30% is a drop I never would’ve called but yeah I saw it making a 3.5 multiplier so upper 500’s to lower 600’s… dude. That may be a tad askew. THIS sucker may challenge NWH’d domestic! But I will at least up my expectations to 700.

Haven’t seen it yet, gotta rewatch the first one, been a good 30 years, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. My turn
DoubleD - 6/5/2022, 10:53 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - 90 Million I didn't see that one coming. :)
TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 11:12 AM
@DoubleD - heck no that’s Tom cruise levels of crazy
TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 11:44 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - call me crazy but I can see it’s domestic making so much that even with a low foreign it still tops a billion. I think that’s crazy talk but I will revisit this thought if the numbers bear it out
TheHumanSpider2 - 6/5/2022, 11:56 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - If it wasnt for Jurassic World 3, maybe it had a chance, but dinosaurs are dominating the global BO next weekend.
TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 12:09 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - yes I can see dinosaurs and fighter pilots coexisting stateside but not foreign
DoubleD - 6/5/2022, 1:24 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - While Dr. Strange 2 a comic book movie is dueling it out with Top Gun: Maverick non-comic book movie. I have one question Where is The Batman?
TheWalkingCuban - 6/5/2022, 4:47 PM
@DoubleD - in the dust
DoubleD - 6/5/2022, 5:55 PM
@regularmovieguy - Where is The Batman?
Crtdacct2say - 6/5/2022, 8:31 AM
Maybe do a re-re-release but this time in 2000 theaters and make it 3D, and did reshoots.

Ya, then we'll definitely see it. 😉
