SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE NYCC Panel Highlights And Interview With Shameik Moore And Jake Johnson

Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of this year's most anticipated comic book movies and at New York Comic Con, fans were treated to a sneak peek at the upcoming animated film.

The first 35 minutes of the movie was shown and while Marvel has opted not to spoil anything, they did tease that the audience reacted "with massive enthusiasm to what was shown." In addition to the footage, the film's creators and cast took the stage with executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller as they each discussed what attracted them to the movie and what makes it special.

"Maybe we can use the fact that this story has been told a lot of times to our advantage, so the expectation is how can we make it differently," said Lord, who knew early on that they wanted to tell Miles Morales' story.

Meanwhile, co-director Bob Persichetti talked about doing the first animated Spider-Man movie. Persichetti explained (via Marvel):

“This was our chance to lean into a medium that was just made for Spider-Man. How can we take advantage of this medium that has been expressive for so many years and tie it to the original source material, which is a comic book?” He said they decided to “Lean into flash frame and visuals that are reminiscent of drawings but figure out how to do it with a computer, which is its own giant task.”

The cast also talked a bit about the diversity and representation that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse allows for. And I don't mean all the different Spider-Man variants like Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir. Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales, talked about how when he was a child he dreamed of being Miles Morales - a black Spider-Man.

"When I was younger and I first saw Miles Morales I thought ‘Dude, this is a black Spider-Man. I definitely want to play a black Spider-Man some day!’”

Brian Tyree Henry, who voices Miles' father Jefferson, also expressed excitement in representing a black father-son dynamic. “To see a black boy and his father, you don’t really get to see that,” he said, adding that it was important to him to show that Miles had a good upbringing. Luna Lauren Velez voices Miles' mom Rio, and she loved bringing the bilingual aspect into the story.

In the film, Peter Parker serves as a somewhat reluctant mentor to Miles and voice actor Jake Johnson said audiences will see a version of Parker we've not yet seen before on screen. He said: “Peter Parker at 40. Peter Parker who’s a little chubby. Peter Parker who’s a little depressed. And that’s a new Peter Parker!"

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took about three years to complete, according to co-director Peter Ramsey, who added that this film was created with a lot of "blood, sweat and tears and anguish," along with "a lot of love and a lot of passion."

In addition to the panel, stars Shameik Moore and Jake Johnson popped by the Marvel booth at NYCC for a more in-depth interview about the upcoming movie.

Fans will get to go on this new journey with Miles Morales when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14.

I really had fun with the teaser after Venom, hope this is the first of some good animated films on Sony's side.

With all the live action SuperHero films we are getting lately, it looked like the animated side was almost forgotten.

We need more animated CBMs, and this is already looking like a great reason as to why. There’s so much more liberties that you can take with animation than live action

@Bakugo - The only animated movies that have been made specifically for theatres have been tongue-in-cheek jokey ones aimed at a younger audience.

This'll be the first one to play it as real as the live action movies.

Hopefully it'll start a revolution, because I'd love to see so many more in this vein.

Maybe DC can test the water with a Young Justice movie or something.

@GwenLantern - I didn't look this up so correct me if I'm wrong but wasnt batman mask of the phantasm made for theaters?

GwenLantern - 10/6/2018, 3:09 PM
@MyCoolYoung - It was, yeah, that's absolutely right.
But that was about a million years ago, now. The Fleischer Superman cartoons count, too, I suppose, but they were out just around the dawn of mankind, I think.

But yeah, you are right, Mask of the Phantasm got a Christmas release, too, in 1993.

Wait...

Hey! That's exactly 25 years! The first serious animated cbm to come out since Mask of the Phantasm comes out on the 25th anniversary of Mask of the Phantasm!

That makes me love this movie even more.

Self-correction: Spider-verse comes out on the 14th Dec, even though the trailers say "Christmas". Still, just 11 days shy of the 25th anniversary of Mask of the Phantasm's release.

@GwenLantern - that is pretty cool piece of history. 25 years though? Jeez do I feel old. It seem like a few years ago that came out. I was 4 and I remember that being in theaters. Wow

When did Marvel come up with the name Ghost Spider? I hope in the movie, they establish that that's Gwen's superhero codename.

"director Peter Ramsey, who added that this film was created with a lot of blood, sweat and tears and anguish, along with "a lot of love and a lot of passion."

Now THAT'S what I want to hear. Add the fact that this movie apparently took 3 years to make, everything about this just looks reassuring that it'll be awesome.

Animation looks spectacular, story and characters look intriguing... I want this to be the best Spidey film ever. High expectations, but I'm just that hyped.

Last trailer had me like...

@KWilly - Me too, man. So many easter eggs.

Two that I have not heard anybody talking about appear when Miles in his bedroom getting ready for school.

I'm pretty sure there are posters on the wall that make very sneaky refernces to both Superman and Lego Batman (Phil Lord and Chris Miller both produced The Lego Batman Movie as well as Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse).

I'm hyped for this. Hopefully it's a great enough showing for people to want a live action miles rather than people continuing to say keep him in animation. Who knows in a few years we'll probably have miles in a video game and live action.

I'm SOOOO looking forward to this! It looks like fun and might be a bit better than the comic Spider-Verse, which I'm currently reading through. Still kinda salty that Spidey 2099 hasn't been added, but I can just hope he'll get his chance some day

This movie looks amazing and a lot of fun! But that crappy frame rate burns my eyes. I get that it saves money on paying animators. But isn't there some sort of technology that fill in the gaps? Some program that can guesstimate the motion between drawings and add frames? Even the cheapo new She Ra and TMNT have better framerates. This is like trying to watch a film that's still buffering.
