SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Star Jake Gyllenhaal Reveals How Tom Holland Helped Him Deal With Anxiety

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal has recalled how he struggled with anxiety on the set of the Marvel Studios sequel, and it was Tom Holland who ultimately helped him move past those issues.

Jake Gyllenhaal came close to replacing Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2, but the actor was finally able to swing into the Marvel Universe as Mysterio in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. The actor did a spectacular job as Quentin Beck, but the role was one he's admitted to struggling with.

As a big fan of Spider-Man and the MCU, Gyllenhaal recently explained to Howard Stern that his anxiety got the best of him on the set of the Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures sequel.

"I was freaking out," he confessed. "It was a scene with [Samuel L.] Jackson, Tom…there were a number of actors in that scene...And I remember not being able to remember my lines. I went up to Tom Holland and was like, 'Dude, help me out.' He's like, 'It's all good, man. Just relax.' It was like he was me in so many situations. And I finally did."

"I just put a lot of pressure on [myself] because I love that world. I love that world, man. It's not me coming in as an actor going like, 'Oh, I've made 60 films...I know what I'm doing," Gyllenhaal continued. "It's me coming in every time being like, 'I love Spider-Man. I love this world. I want to kill it here.'"

Stern agreed with the actor's sentiments and pointed out the sheer scale of the MCU. That led to him recalling how out of his depth he felt on the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel's set. "Exactly. Like, Sam Jackson's just rolling with it, throwing out improv, they're changing movies around him. And I'm just, like, I can't even barely get my line out."

Despite the difficulties he faced working on Spider-Man: Far From Home, Gyllenhaal nailed Mysterio and delivered a top tier MCU villain in the process. The hope among fans is that he'll return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially as Beck orchestrated Peter's identity being revealed to the world and made him a wanted murderer.

Wow that’s actually a bit of a shock to me, that an actor as good as Jale Gyllenhaal who has made loads of films would be anxious and nervous about performing.. especially after seeing how cool Mysterio was in Far From Home, you’d never guess lol really hope he’s in Far From Home, I’d be disappointed if his death was real.

@JohnCastillo - Absolutely! Never would have guessed from his performance. Goes to show even the most experienced and talented of actors can have wobbles.

@JohnCastillo - And to top it off, goes to an actor with way less experience than him for a pep talk lol.

@KWilly - To be fair to Holland he’s a veteran in the Marvel Superhero world compared to Gyllenhaal.

@KWilly - I'm pretty sure all of us will fanboy out or forget our lines if Sam Jackson was in front of us lol. Sam Jackson is an underrated actor because he's in everything.

I'm still not a fan of Far From Home but I don't blame Gyllenhaal for it. Everything he's in he just nails it. Surprised to read it doesn't always come naturally though

This sounds like a low grade fever or a tiny sliver more than anything else. "Oh no. I sliced my hand open on the sharpest piece of computer paper ever and I'm bleeding profusly." Mr Dramatic.

When Jake Gyllenhaal says "I was freaking out." What he means is "I was so star struck to see a legend like Sam Jackson go to work. He was improving and I had never done that before. Im just so amazed at how awesome he is."

What a total fan boy. Thats cool. We've all been there.

In the real world if someone were to say "I've got anxiety and cant sleep or do anything productive. My life is a wreck. Please help." and someone said "Well sure man. Just pray it away and relax. It will go away if you just breathe in and out a couple of times. Have you tried just not being anxtious?" they would have been discounted and destroyed by mental health activists. But we live in a clown world and Jake Gyllenhaal / Tom Holland are the elite and dont care about the mental health crisis in this country.
