SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Could Totally Confuse The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Continuity

Some new details on how Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been revealed, but they could complicate how the wall-crawler fits into this world's timeline!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe moves in real-time, and while that means gaps between movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron results in there being a lot we don't see on the big screen, it's an easy way to keep track of what's going on in this shared universe.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, however, will be shaking things up. We already know that the franchise will follow the Harry Potter movies by having each instalment set during a different year in high school, but in a recent interview, producer Eric Carroll revealed that even this first movie plays with the timeline.

"There will be some awkward chronology in that the movie comes out almost two years after Civil War, but we’re playing it like it’s a few months after Civil War. It hasn’t been years since Tony called him back. It came down to one of things we wanted to do was keep him in high school as long as possible. Let’s have him do something fun and different. Sony came to ourselves when we sat down and we thought, ‘Why do this version?’ And it is because we can really do a high school. Show that this is a young hero. Otherwise you have seen it all before…"

It sounds like Marvel will play fast and loose with where Spider-Man fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe then. While over two years will have likely passed between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War for every other character, it will have just been a matter of weeks for Peter Parker. Honestly, this is something it's best not to think too much about, but it is interesting.

Cool with me, I mean films like Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk had mixed timelines but they didn't hurt the experience. Since I'm a continuity fanatic when it comes to these films, when exactly does it take place after Civil War? I'd probably put it around...hmm...August or September since Peter is in school and Civil War released in mid April. PLUS...

Homecoming

Most likely September.

Once it makes sense continuity wise it doesn't matter to me when the movie is set.

Almost 2 years? It comes out just a little over a year lol, and it's not that hard to follow since Guardians 2 takes place only a few months after Guardians 1

It's not that confusing at all

I was under the impression that every movie after Civil War happened a few months after, not that they would play out in real time. Since when was 2 years in real time equal to two years between the events of the movies?

@Comedian666 - Most of the movies happen in real time, except for Iron Man 3 happening during Christmas but coming out in May

I really don't see how this confuses things. it only gets confusing when you start to speculate about the amount of years that have passed, something the movies, like the comics, don't tell (as far as I remember).

This doesn't confuse the timeline. Thor, Hulk and Iron Man 2 take place at the same time despite being released within a 3 year window. This doesn't break the continuity, it just makes it marginally harder to understand.

But seeing as both Guardians and Thor Ragnarok are apparently set a few months after their own predecessor (GOTG 2014 and AoU 2015), I don't see how this is a problem. Basically every MCU movie this year is set a few months after the one before it even if that movie was released several years earlier.

Oh how I wish Sony could have just sold the rights and been done with it. I hate that they're still involved in some way. It's the reason we have an unwanted Venom and Black Cat/ Silver Sable movie on the way.

@MasterMix - True, as great as it is that they are working together (for now). We just can't help worrying about Sony ending their partnership because as both Sony and Marvel have (now) said "They will work together up to Homecoming 2, and then it's up in the air at that point."

Not entirely comforting is it? =/

If they wanna do 4 movies of high school, then shouldn't these come out annually? Imagine getting a Spider-man movie every year like Harry Potter.

Personally I see Doctor Strange as happening well before The Winter Solider. Might not be official, but it makes that reference by Sitwell make more sense.

@FishyZombie - Well Doctor Strange is meant to occur after that ,as Kevin Feige and Scott Derrickson both confirmed that he was not a sorcerer yet when HYDRA had him in their sights and you can see an award for Strange in his penthosue that is dated 2016 (TWS occurs in 2014)

@FishyZombie - The Hydra algorithm was to predict possible threats to Hydra. Even pre mystical Strange can fit into that category given his status and prestige. So you don't need to have Dr Strange set pre WS.
