Yesterday saw the release of a new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and all signs point to this sequel eventually ranking among 2023's best movies.
We've now taken a deep dive into that new footage to bring you an in-depth recap of all the biggest moments and reveals, including a list of the many Spider-Man Variants we spotted. There are some huge, unexpected names among them, with web-slingers from animation, video games, and possibly even live-action making their presence felt.
We also have some very exciting new story details, all of which offer a much better idea of where the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will take Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Peter B. Parker, Spider-Woman, and Spider-Man 2099.
To take a look through this breakdown, all you guys need to do is click the "Next" button below!
6. Spider-Man Finds His Footing As A Superhero
In recent years, Marvel has gone a long way in establishing Miles Morales as more than just the other Spider-Man.
Thrown into the deep end in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it's clear the teenager has really found his footing as a superhero as he confidently swings into action here. At the same time, Miles is clearly struggling to balance those adventures with his home life, leading to an unfortunate clash with his mom and dad.
It's exciting to think about what it will look like for this Spider-Man to be more than just a rookie, especially with him facing what is clearly going to be his greatest challenge yet...
5. Is Spider-Man 2099 The Movie's Big Bad?
While we know Miles will have to contend with The Spot in both Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 definitely appears to the this movie's antagonist.
A shot of Miguel O'Hara with his daughter (Gabriella is a he in the comics named Gabi) points to some sort of tragic background, and we later see the future Spidey from Nueva York unsheathing his claws to take aim at our Spider-Man. Something tells us this isn't a simple superhero misunderstanding!
It appears Miguel has assembled a massive team of spider heroes to protect the Spider-Verse, but Miles clearly doesn't agree with whatever approach that army is taking.
4. That's A Lot Of Variants
We see a huge number of alternate reality web-slingers in this trailer, but how many did you spot? Here's who we managed to definitively identify:
- Spider-Man (PS4)
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5)
- Spider-Armor MK II
- Spinneret
- Spiderling
- Lady-Spider
- Bombastic Bag-Man
- Superior Spider-Man
- Six-Armed Spider-Man
- Spider-Armor MK I
- Spider-Man (PS1)
- Spider-Monkey
- Spider-Man: Unlimited
- Spider-Clan
- Werewolf Spider-Man
We have a feeling Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland's respective Spider-Men may also be in there, though it's hard to say for sure. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse clearly takes a deep dive into the comic books, animated TV shows, and video games, and it will be interesting to find out how much screentime is devoted to these eye-catching Variants!
3. Peter B. Parker Returns!
Following Peter B. Parker's story in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse proved to be just as enjoyable as Miles Morales' arc, so we're very pleased that he returns in this sequel.
While taking in the huge number of spider-people around them, Miles and Gwen are greeted by a familiar face when they turn around and their old ally drops from the ceiling. It appears this Peter managed to make things right with Mary Jane Watson because he's decked out in a bathrobe and holding onto a baby carrier.
Oh, and we know who is in that: it's Mayday Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Girl! She probably won't grow up to become that hero for a while, but this is a great direction to take Peter B. Parker's story in!
2. Spider-Woman Vs. The Vulture
We've known for a while now that Issa Rae will play Spider-Woman here, and all signs point to her having a key role as one of Spider-Man 2099's closest allies.
Riding a motorbike through a Multiversal portal, she leaps into action against a very interesting take on The Vulture. The first movie didn't shy away from reinventing some of Spidey's greatest foes, putting new spins on everyone from the Green Goblin to Scorpion. That will clearly be the case here as well, but Jessica Drew no doubt plans to put this Vulture down quickly.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Spider-Woman may wear a costume that's inspired by the one Kris Anka designed back in 2014, but based on her powers here, she's a wholly unique creation for this movie.
1. Spider-Man Vs. The Spider-Verse
We're still not sure what Miles has done to p*ss off his fellow spider-heroes, but they're all out to get him at the end of this trailer. That means he's majorly outgunned, and we do wonder what leads to this very clear clash in ideologies.
Spider-Man 2099 continues to stand out as the biggest threat, but we're sure he has good intentions. It seems he's taken it upon himself to protect the entire Spider-Verse, hence why we see what looks like a very technology-heavy take on both the Web of Life and Destiny and The Great Weaver.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is clearly going to put a very unique spin on this "Spider-Verse" concept, and we can't wait to see how this story plays out!
