SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Producers On Working With Marvel Studios And [SPOILER]'s Live-Action Cameo

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have addressed their working relationship with Marvel Studios and shed new light on how they convinced a certain actor to play Prowler.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features a lot of fun surprises, though perhaps the biggest was somehow kept under wraps prior to the sequel's release in theatres last week.

We are, of course, talking about Donald Glover's Prowler. The actor first played Aaron Davis in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming but has yet to return to that world; however, there's clearly at least one reality where he suits up as the iconic villain and occasional anti-hero.

Talking to Rolling Stone (via Toonado.com), producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were asked to elaborate on recruiting the actor they first worked with when he played Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story

"Yeah, it was definitely a personal reach-out to Donald, who we love and stayed close with," Lord says. "We reached out and were like, 'We thought of something. It will be so easy. And you commit to nothing.' And he was really excited to be part of it."

Miller adds, "We did a fun little shoot. And we got Trayce Gigi Field, who was the costume designer for the first season of [Miller’s Apple TV+ series] The Afterparty to build a Prowler suit in a matter of weeks."

Asked why the movie featured live-action elements rather than just animating those characters, Miller said, "We [wanted] to honor the original cinematic style or language that each world’s character is coming from...we never even considered doing an animated version of Donald Glover. That wasn’t true to the universe that his character came from."

Early in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 references the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and specifically namedrops Doctor Strange.

The movie even features a shot of the Multiverse that's blatantly identical to the MCU's version, and Lord had nothing but good things to say about what sounds like a very giving back-and-forth with Marvel Studios.

"Marvel has given us a lot of rope. It’s been a very fruitful collaboration. But it’s not like there’s some shadowy board of figures that you have to run things by. I think Kevin’s a big admirer of the first movie and just believes like a rising tide lifts all boats."

With any luck, this means those recent Avengers: Secret Wars rumours are indeed correct.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.

The fact that it resembled the same thing seen in Loki, makes me believe that some of these Spider people will be in Secret Wars.

@MCUKnight11 - I wouldn't bet money on it...Sony and MCU are still separated outside of Tom Hollands Spidey stuff.

@BlackStar25 - Michael Keaton in Morbius, Garfield and Maguire and all the villains in the MCU…

It’s really all down to just if Feige feels like it or not. Not insurmountable in the least

@AmazingFILMporg - maybe to write, but their direction might leave something to desire. It would be one thing if they simply put out a bad film, but they crashed and burned so hard on Solo I imagine most studios are hesitant to get them to do live action at any scale.

@AmazingFILMporg - nobody outside of Feige’s orgy parties are allowed in the MCU, try again.

So for those who haven't put all the MCU connections together. Here are some others. What If "Doctor Strange lost his heart" was the entire concept of a canon event. In What If, The Ancient One calls it an Absolute Point. It's the same exact thing just named differently. But the consequences remain the same. Miguel did was Strange in What If did. Vulture appearing in Morbius is due to the Collider that Fisk built it causes a ripple in the Spider-Verse warping out various heroes and villains and sending them into alternate universes. Doctor Strange basically saved Earth 616 by stopping the spell temporarily and in doing so locked anyone who knew Peter Parker out. This may have prevented Miguel from coming in. This explains why he is so pissed at Doctor Strange.

@SonOfAGif - I had a lot of trouble with the logic presented in What If that you couldn't change a certain event in the timeline, because there are obviously timelines where Palmer didn't die, like the main MCU. I just can't roll with the idea that each universe has it's own multiverse of timelines.

But the way they explained it as a canon event really justifies the idea of an Absolute Point. Because it's not presented as scientific, but rather mythical and mystical, it seems to make more sense. Like every universe has to have certain events happen, not because of science, but because of destiny.
And of course the meta quality of the fans needing every adaptation to stick to certain key events from the original source material and not stray too far from canon makes it way more relatable and therefore easier to comprehend in that way.

I also thought about the Morbius scene, like you said. I can't believe they actually justified that stupid-ass scene! I love it and I might actually get my Morb on at some point in the future and watch it with fresh eyes. At least that scene, maybe not the whole movie.
When Keaton's talking about Spider-Man, we just assume he means Tom Holland and that just doesn't makes sense, because Tom Holland's spell wouldn't do that. But now we know he's not talking about Tom Holland at all, he's talking about Miles! I love that. This movie does a lot of good works in regards to smoothing everything over and I think Marvel could do a lot worse than them if they're looking for Secret Wars directors.

They even fixed the universe designation thing. They called the MCU Earth 199999 instead of 616. Also, they had a caption stating that Ultimate Tarantula was from Earth 1610A, distinguishing it from Earth 1610 (Miles' Earth). I think I even saw an Earth 65B, but I can't be sure.

Putting letters on them is an easy get-out clause for continuity contradictions. So Peter B. Parker's Earth could have easily been confused as a future version of the comics 616 in the first movie, but this movie seems to contradict comics continuity by having MJ remember Peter from high school. But that's not problem because one of these Earths would be 616A.

Why aren’t they writing and direct the next batch of live action Spider-Man movies? It’s so perfect.

Very cool nod but I doubt it's the same Aaron we saw in homecoming.

Unless he gets mindwiped. They wouldn't start off miles morales in the MCU with his uncle knowing about all spider people.

Or would they?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/8/2023, 5:25 AM
@Toonstrack - Everyone assumes it's Aaron. What if it's Miles?

The movie ends with Miles as The Prowler and Donald Glover was the original inspiration for Miles.
Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 6/8/2023, 3:52 PM
@ObserverIO - I mean I highly doubt that. Its very likely Aaron davis. That miles we saw was living a Latino culture, Aaron davjs is just African american.

@Toonstrack - That's a good point, I didn't think of that.

This isn't the first time they've reteamed with one of their Landos.

Billy Dee Williams played Lando for them in The Lego Movie and then came back as Harvey Dent in The Lego Batman Movie.

Also, this really puts the Solo thing in a whole new light huh? Remember the unconfirmed reports that the cast were pissed at Lord and Miller? It's obvious now that this was just some bullshit spin put out by Lucasfilm to try and save face. It was BULLLLSHIIIIT.
