There's a huge amount of excitement for this June's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, especially as the movie promises to showcase countless alternate versions of the web-slinger. However, while we admittedly expected most of them to be background players, now might be a good time to temper expectations for the sequel.
The massively popular PlayStation Spider-Man was spotted in the trailer (alongside Miles Morales), and even featured prominently on a recently released banner.
Despite that, Spider-Man star Yuri Lowenthal (who reprises the role in this Fall's Spider-Man 2), confirms Sony Pictures and the movie's producers have yet to contact him about lending his voice to the hero. This could be an indication that his Spidey will only appear fleetingly, though there is still time to enlist Lowenthal's services.
For what's it worth, the actor - who was speaking to us about his role as Mon El in February 7's Legion of Super-Heroes - isn't sweating it and wasn't remotely critical of the studio or anyone else involved. He would, however, love the chance to be part of what looks like a very special movie.
"I hope so. [Laughs] You know, I still don’t know and I keep waiting for my phone to ring. There are many ways they could play that and one of those ways is, much like they showcased our suit in the background in the first film, you might just get to see him. I don’t know. I hope."
"It always sounds desperate when I say, ‘Yeah, I would love to be in it.’ Then people report on that: ‘Actor would do anything to be in the new movie!’" Lowenthal added with a laugh. "I try not to talk about it too much because I don’t want to sound desperate, but I hope so."
We hope so too, especially as the actor has become synonymous with the web-slinger after his spectacular performance in Spider-Man. While this Peter Parker hasn't been at the forefront of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's marketing campaign, fans are hoping he'll get something to do, and Lowenthal is essential to that.
Legion of Super-Heroes is set to be released on February 7.
