MORBIUS Actor Matt Smith On His Character's Identity: "It's All A Bit Confusing To Me"

Matt Smith plays the main villain in Morbius, but the actor recently revealed that he was left feeling a little confused when it comes to the character's identity.

Every superhero movie needs a villain. For Morbius, that role will be filled by Matt Smith's Milo. Soon after The Crown actor was announced to have joined the cast of Sony's upcoming Marvel movie, The Hollywood Reporter stated that he would be playing Loxias Crown, a.k.a. Hunger, an obscure Spider-Man villain from the '90s (created by John Romita Jr. and Howard Mackie) who got his powers from the Living Vampire himself.

Recently, however, it was revealed that Smith would actually be playing Milo, a newly created character for the film. He is Michael Morbius' childhood friend and suffers from the same blood disease. The apparent identity change didn't seem all that important at the time, but it appears the character has been a source of confusion for its actor, as Matt Smith has revealed that he's unsure of who the baddie actually is.

Speaking with Screen Rant, the Morbius star explained that he's not very familiar with Milo's backstory since the movie's script didn't explore it. Furthermore, he doesn't quite understand the villain's identity:

"The truth is, I wasn't aware of the great big history of the character in many respects. Because the script I was presented with doesn't really delve into the past of him - or indeed the future. And isn't someone else playing him? It's all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you. I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias [Crown] or not. I'm still not quite sure, to be honest."

Going by his wording, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that, at some point, Milo was indeed supposed to be Loxias Crown. Either way, we'll likely get a better idea about the source of the actor's confusion once the movie arrives.

As reported by CBR.com, in the film, Smith's character was originally named Lucien, but got a name-change after Michael Morbius renamed him "Milo." According to the site, Sony described Milo as the heir to a powerful family, who, being aware of his limited time on Earth (due to his blood disease), uses his money to live life to the fullest.

As for his villainous motivations, Smith told CBR: "[Michael and Milo] both get the same power -- one goes one way, and one goes the other way... The lust for more blood, for more feeling, more power — Milo doesn't shy away from it... The idea that Michael is trying to deny his instincts as this creature is just beguiling to Milo. Why? 'We've spent all our lives hobbling around, feeling second-best. And suddenly we feel like gods. And you're gonna throw it away because that's the good thing to do?'"

Morbius leaps into theaters on April 1st, 2022.

This movie will be Fan4stic bad. Calling it. It'll give Sony a slap in reality, and they'll cancel half of their dumb Spidey spinoffs.

Well this brings me back to Michael Keaton. Number one I now believe he asked to be cut LOL, but also number one, Sony doesn’t know what they’re doing… They could have put the vulture in NWH and had Six villains. Instead you have a guy who knows Spiderman’s identity, and then everybody knows it, and now nobody knows it including him. One of the best villains in the MCU.

Sony after Far from home: we don't need marvel we know what we're doing

Also Sony: don't worry about who your character is or what makes him tick. You just act dammit

Yikes! I'm confused as to why they had to change the name/character. Doesn't Sony own the entire Spidey-verse? Including all its villains? If so, why change the villain's name and motivation? Does this new Milo character who has the same blood disease as Morbius, have a reason to be there outside of being the yin to Morbius' yang? Finally, him saying the character has no backstory doesn't make sense. His backstory is his motivation. The guy (who isn't Loxias Crown) is SUPER rich. Has the same blood disease as morbius. Somehow gets the same powers as Morbius. Revels in his new power and doesn't blink an eye killing people for their blood. Morbius has to stop him. That's the backstory. That's the whole plot of the movie (besides a helluva lot of hand wringing and angst). What's he confused about? What am I confused about? What the hell is going on?

Saw this trailer with X last nigh….[frick]ing pumped.

Would be lying if the smash cut to the title didn’t elicit a lot of laughter in the theater.

The only explanation I can think of is Sony purposely dive-bombing every character they own before selling all the rights back to Marvel

So basically your most generic villain. Honestly nothing about this movie seems interesting, gladly skipping it.

Why did he accept the part then? Matt Smith is really bad a choosing film roles

I have heard that Morbius has been heavily re-cut and that it was once a good movie, but is now incoherent and doesn't make sense anymore.

It looks like Jared Leto has another Joker/Suicide Squad situation on his hands.

Black Cat and Rhino nods have been removed, as have all Adrian Toomes/The Vulture/Michael Keaton scenes in the movie itself.
Only a short after-credit scene remains.

Matt Smiths role has also been altered during filming, which may explain his confusion.

It looks like the original movie has been so heavily altered that the movie will now bomb hard.

Sony should just concede creative control for all of their Spider-Man properties to Feige and co. Whether it is or isn't in the MCU is beside the point to me. Give the creative reins to people who understand it. Feige and co. can decide if it's connected to the larger MCU or not. This is a mess. And what's worse, is there's so much potential for Spidey's pantheon of rogues. Shame.
